Electronic Signatures in Qualtrics
The university accepts electronic signatures that comply with Ohio’s electronic signature laws, ensuring authenticity, nonrepudiation, integrity, recipient copy, and opt-out.
- Authenticity and Nonrepudiation: Requires multi-factor authentication in Qualtrics, such as Single Sign On (DUO), a unique password, or SMS verification, to confirm signer identity.
- Multi-factor authentication is difficult if not impossible to set up for some survey-ee, therefore, we don’t recommend using Qualtrics’ eSignature if a legally binding signature is required.
- Integrity: Signatures must be tamper-proof and come with an audit trail, including a digitally sealed PDF with authentication details, date, and intent.
- Recipient Copy and Opt-out: Signers should receive a copy and have the option to sign on paper instead.
If you require a legally binding signature, please consider using DocuSign as it is the official eSignature application for the university. Alternatively, RedCap could also be considered if you are using it in a research capacity.
If you have questions, please contact DocuSign esignature@osu.edu or RedCap rit-edc@osumc.edu.
For research:
Signature needs vary by study risk. High-risk studies may require legally binding signatures, which must follow university policy, while low-risk studies may only need participant acknowledgment in Qualtrics. Consult the IRB on requirements.
***Please note****: Qualtrics eSignature is not accessible for screen readers.
