Artifacts

All throughout high school, I was a very anxious person. Deadlines, even if they were months away, would haunt me in my sleep. I would not be able to study for the test tomorrow because I was too busy stressing about how I would be able to memorize everything for the midterm, which was months away. It was a vicious cycle that I was unable to get out of. There were some pluses, of course, I never missed a deadline, I was never working on any assignment up until the last second. Teachers thought I had so much dedication when I submitted a paper 3 days early, little did they know my anxiety caused me to finish the assignment 3 weeks ago.

Me & the wonderful principal I mention in this post on my socially distanced graduation day!

I had this mindset until I met the principal of the second high school I attended. I remember one day I was managing the school store, filling out a poster for the spring sports season in September. He asked what I was doing and I explained my bad habit, this is when he said the 5 words that have turned into a mantra for me – “control what you can control”. He elaborated, you cannot time travel, you cannot control the future, you can only control this moment and what you make of it, do not stress about the future, you have no control over it.

Not only did these words help me tackle my bad habit but it applied outside of schoolwork too. If I was driving and saw a car make a bad move, instead of yelling and getting mad, I repeated those words to myself. If I ever got a result that I did not want, I repeated those words to myself. Little does my high school principal know that he made such a big impact on my life and said the mantra that I will never forget.

(Thank you, Mr. Spinner!)
