Our country was founded on the principal that everybody is equal no matter who they are or where they come from. Despite the fact that this belief has not always been held up, we do constantly strive, as Americans, to improve. We have seen this through the Abolitionist Movement and Voter’s Right Movement. We must again make changes to help improve our country. It is unlawful that over 4.6 million Americans do not have a voice in our Congress. As an American citizen everyone deserves a right to be heard by Congress. Congress works for the American people, yet if the people who Congress reports to cannot manage to tell them what to do, is Congress truly working for the people?

If 4.6 million people have no voice, can Congress adequately complete their job? It is imperative that we change the way that representation on a national level is assigned. The ratio of constituent to representative should be much smaller. Some might complain that this will make Congress larger, but this only allows for more voices to be heard and more ideas to be spread. More minds can help to create better solutions. This will help to equal out how 500,000 people get the same amount of voting power as 1,000,000 people. The House of Representatives was designed to truly be the voice of the American people, but this type of representation does not serve the people. No citizen should not be represented in Congress. There should be representatives elected to represent citizens of the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and other places. If we are going to count a person as a citizen and rule over them, we should allow them to be fully functioning members of society, not quasi-members.

My mentor Matt Leder is a second year here at The Ohio State University. He is an economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Matt has enjoyed his experiences in PSL and has meet many of his friends through the program. Additionally, he is looking at law school and is on the Pre-Law side of the PSL. Outside of school, Matt leads a club called Empower Mentoring. This program helps to teach financial literacy and college readiness to high school students across the Columbus area. Matt is also a University Ambassador for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and enjoys giving tours to prospective students.
