Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

I have a variety of plans for how I am going to fulfill the Honors and Scholars GOALS.

Global Awareness to me means that I have knowledge of the state of the world around me, not just in my community, but abroad. That could mean anything from knowing tidbits about French culture from French class, to following international news. For Global Awareness, I plan to study abroad at some point during my four years in the Ohio State Honors Program.  I would love to go to Europe to get to experience their rich cultures and histories first hand. By getting the opportunity to live with and among populations outside of the United States I will gain awareness about global issues and viewpoints.

Original Inquiry to me, means creativity, by looking at the world in a different, and perhaps uncomfortable, light. Original Inquiry is thinking outside the box, or writing short stories, as I sometimes do. For Original Inquiry, I intend to, at some point, take an Honors level theater class to expand my knowledge of the performing arts and challenge my own original creativity.

Academic Enrichment to me means challenging myself with difficult courses, and giving my all in all the course I take. For Academic Enrichment, I have engaged myself in rigorous coursework. My first semester freshman year I am in two three thousand level courses. I plan to take a variety of honors courses for the GE and take high level history and political science courses as I pursue my two majors. I am challenging myself academically by having two majors.

Leadership development for me means understanding what it takes to step up when circumstances are tough. It also means knowing when it is better to be a follower. For Leadership Development, I have gone to a number of clubs to find ways to get involved and lead outside organizations. Eventually, I would like to be an officer in the History Club. I have demonstrated leadership skills in the past by earning my Girl Scout Gold Award.

Service Engagement means to me that I give back to my community, be that a local, educational or global one. It means acknowledging that giving is more important than receiving, and the best way to provide thanks is with actions, not words. For Service Engagement, I plan to do service work with my church on campus, the Newman Center. They offer mission trips over breaks and opportunities to make sandwiches to  donate, among other things. Through service engagement of any kind, I look forward to making new friends, having eye-opening experiences and gaining valuable perspectives.

Overall, I am excited to pursue the various aspects of GOALS in my four years as a member of the Honors Program at OSU.
