Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S. for the Scholar’s Program mean global awareness, original inquiry, academic enrichment, leadership development, and service engagement. As a scholar student, each of these goals are very important to me.

Global awareness is very important to me because of R.O.T.C and the major I am choosing to go into. For example, as an airman in the US Air Force, I need to not only worry about what is going on in the United States but also the whole world. It is my job to fight for my country and help anyone that I can at the best of my ability. The major that I am going into is Aviation Engineering. This will be giving me an opportunity to fly globally and I need to be able to understand different cultures that I am flying into. I want to be as aware as possible and know what is appropriate and not appropriate in different countries.

Original inquiry is important to me because I could do further research with a professor on the aircraft that I am flying and how I could maybe improve that aircraft to run more efficiently. As a first year student, I have not had a lot of experience with the research and advanced work that revolves in flight. I am hoping to eventually be able to work with a professor on improving flight dynamics so that when I am flying a plane one day I will feel completely safe in it.

Academic enrichment has been apart of my goals all throughout my life. Through all of high school, I have challenged myself with the honors, AP, or college classes to prepare me for college. Now that I am in college, I still do that. As an engineer, my course work is already more demanding than other students. I have chosen to take a higher calc and then also take classes for a second major to challenge myself. I tend to want to keep myself busy and learn as much as I can which is why I am dual majoring and taking such vigorous classes.

Leadership development has also played a huge role in my life. In sports, I was a captain of the team multiple times and had to be leader to the team. I also coached a little league girls’ softball team my junior year of high school, which challenged me by teaching them the fundamentals, making the schedules and then also being a role model to a bunch of ten year olds. However, my leadership has not stopped since I have been in college. While in college, I have joined the US Air Force ROTC. The purpose behind ROTC is to train the cadets into leaders so that they can lead other airman when they are officers. Thus, I have been gaining confidence in leading my flight and taking charge in ROTC which has placed more leadership tasks on my plate. Leading is one of my strong traits and this plays a role academically  as well. I tend to take charge in groups, delegate tasks, and we get the job done. This will help in the future when I am an officer or just flying a plane.

Service engagement is a huge part of the Green Engineer Scholars group and a huge part of my life. I volunteer as much as I can and love getting involved in the community. So far at Ohio State I have helped plant trees and better the Columbus community which I now live in. I plan to continue this in the future by joking the Arnold Air Society which volunteers around the community and for veterans. I think this is a huge part to a persons life becomes it humbles them and makes them realize they are just an ant in this huge world.

While at Ohio State, I plan to improve on each of these categories and really drive myself to be the best me that I can be. This will make my life better now and make me stronger and prepared for anything that the future can throw at me.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

Artifact: SVGS Capstone Project

The artifact that I chose to talk about was my capstone project that I completed at Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School. This is a project that relates to a student’s career interest and also relates to the classes that the particular student is taking. All seniors complete this project and it is a year long process. I chose the topic aviation because I want to be a pilot when I am older. I related this to my Geographical Informations System (GIS) class which is a mapping class. The two maps represented above are my end product which I published on ARCGIS online and can be used by the public. My project was to show how the six main airports are the east coast have a huge impact on flights that go all over the nation and the world. From this project, I was able to learn where I might be able to fly to one day if I choose to be a commercial pilot. Also, I learned more about each airport and flight paths that the airplanes fly  in and that was extremely interesting given that one day this will be my job. Through the process of making these maps, I was able to learn more about the mapping systems and this will be a helpful tool when I go into Aeronautical Engineering or if I want to work with anything that maps flight paths. For the future, I can use these maps when doing bigger projects in college and also have a solid background on flight paths and other statistics on flight that I learned when researching airplane data. Also, doing this project reaffirmed me that airplanes and anything that revolves around them is the subject that I want to further dive into. Creating these maps have been a  huge accomplishment to me because of all the time and effort spent into it and I am very proud of the end product that I had created.

About Me

Hi! My name is Leah Pultz. I am from Staunton, Virginia and am currently a freshman at The Ohio State University. My whole life I have stayed very active. I played three sports in high school, while also applying myself to as many clubs as I could. Currently in college, I am a part of the Air Force ROTC and the Mountaineers club. My goal for the future is to be a pilot for the Air Force and then later use that ability in the private sector of flying. Planes and flight have always fascinated me and I am beyond thrilled to be able to learn more about them in college. I want to major in Aeronautical Engineering in case I decide later in life I don’t want to be a pilot. Throughout my life, my mother has pushed me to be the best that I could be and all of my hard work is now paying off because I am able to go to an amazing University to continue to learn about a subject I am truly passionate about. I want to continue to excel and stay focused in my studies, so one day I can make a difference to the world in the flight sector. I am also extremely excited about experiencing new cultures while in Columbus. Once graduated, I hope I can continue to experience new cultures with my job and any other opportunities that approach me.
