Year in Review

The past two years of OSU have been an incredible experience for me. In the next few paragraphs, I am going to go through the ways I have striven towards my G.O.A.L.S.

Starting with the Global Awareness aspect, I feel as if I have done great job of taking advantage of the cultural opportunities that OSU has to offer. Last summer, I went on a study abroad program to Tanzania where I was able to learn Swahili and Tanzanian culture. At the same time, I have made life long friends who are likeminded and service oriented. I also travelled to Peru with Volunteers Around the World this past May. There I was able to practice Spanish and live with a host family that took amazing care of me. I hope to, in the future, join a cultural club or a women’s club to get more involved in global awareness on campus.

After my first semester at OSU, I joined the Seveau lab on campus. The experience has been wonderful for me. My undergraduate research position has made me more confident in presentations, more scientifically eloquent, and has taught me more than some of my classes has. I have access to graduate students and my PI who are extremely invested in my education. I intend to continue my work in the lab. Hopefully by my senior year, I will be able to graduate with a research thesis.

I think that the courses I have selected will make me a well rounded student. I enjoy the science courses that I am taking but I have also enjoyed all of the humanity classes I have taken in the past. I think that my major will prepare me well for applying to medical school. So far, the microbiology major has taught me a discipline that I didn’t know before I came to college. The Spanish minor has connected me with the other side of my interests. I like learning about other cultures. The cultural and scientific combination of my studies have kept me interested in learning and will continue to in the future. I feel as if my selections are a representation of the skills that I want to develop. For example, I want to take a women’s studies class so that I can become more aware of what women have paved the way for me to be where I am today. I think that the course work I have selected will be challenging but satisfying for me to take on.

I am a member of Alpha Chi Omega on the OSU campus. This past year, I have taken on an executive position within the chapter. While it was a large commitment, it was empowering to be the person that people felt like they could trust. I cherish the trust of my sisters and hope that in the future I can continue to work well with my board. I feel like this leadership added a new layer to my personality. I am able to work better with logistics now, as I was in charge of organizing a chapter of 200 women. I feel like my new people skills will help in the medical field because a personal touch is something that I feel can be lost in the landscape.

As for service, I am involved with Buckeyethon on campus. This was my second year doing the dance marathon and it was just as uplifting as the first event. This year, I am also planning on doing my second year of Pelotonia. Last year was my first year doing the peloton. It was one of the best experiences of my life and hope that I can fundraise enough to ride again. As a member of Alpha Chi Omega, I have been very involved in fundraising for domestic violence awareness. The money that we raise through philanthropy events goes to CHOICES, which is a domestic violence shelter in downtown Columbus. Being able to work with them for the past year has been one of the most amazing service experiences I have had in my life. In the future, I hope to start a volunteering position at the Wexner or Nationwide.

G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness: In order to develop a greater sense of diversity in our world, I plan on applying for several study abroad programs. I want to spend time in Africa or Latin America learning the local cultures. I have always been curious of these countries, as I haven’t ever been taught much about them. When I do travel abroad, I plan on fully immersing myself in the country’s culture. I also want to have a better understanding of the languages and beliefs of other countries. I plan on applying for a study abroad trip to Tanzania this summer.

Original Inquiry: I plan on becoming involved in undergraduate research on campus next semester. I would like to contribute something to my field instead of just learning the facts. I am working with the bacteria Listeria next semester. I hope to eventually do individual research on the bacteria. Furthermore, I plan on taking several advanced classes in my major. Through those classes, I can meet professors that are at the top of their field. I want to explore the possibilities that my major holds.

Academic Enrichment: I plan on adding a Spanish minor to my degree. I have always wanted to learn a second language. Since I had room in my schedule, I feel as if I can achieve that goal. I plan on taking as many major classes as I can. I want to see what branch of Microbiology that I am most interested in. I am very interested in movies so I plan on taking one or two film classes during college. I feel like I will enjoy analyzing film on a deeper level.

Leadership Development: Currently, I am a member of Volunteers Around the World. I will be involved in research next semester. Next semester, I want to join an indoor soccer team or a yoga club. I hope to find a club that fits my personality. When I find that club, I will put my all into it. I want to become the type of leader that people find it easy to talk to. I hope that my extracurricular clubs can help me to become that person.

Service Engagement: I am currently involved in Volunteers Around the World. We provide funds to set up clinics in impoverished areas of South and Central America. I am going to be travelling to Peru this summer to work clinics. While I am in country, I hope I can give as much as I can to the community. I hope to start volunteering at a hospital next semester. In the future, I want to get involved in more service in the Columbus area. Since I am from out of town, I think that community service would help me to get to know the city.
