Scholars Seminar 1100

Jessica Baer

Journal #5

As I approach the end on my first semester in college and begin to study for final exams, I am able to look back on these past three months and reflect. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed this semester and loved being apart of the scholars group. Ive enjoyed being active and participating in the group and have met some great people I would not have met otherwise. I plan to fully fulfill my scholars requirements and continue to participate in the program with community service, and getting engaged around Columbus. I also plan to stay active in student organizations on campus like Ohio Staters, H2O, and OUTV. I have found good groups of people around me am enjoying being active at Ohio State. I am also enjoying my major choice and the classes involved but would also like to explore some Architecture classes along with some Business courses. I think getting a minor in one of those areas could benefit me in the future. I also have deep interest in film and its production and would like to investigate some electives in that field. This year I do not plan on getting an internship, but definitely want to prepare myself and open doors for myself for the future, so I plan on being heavily involved in my major. I think these goals that I have set for myself definitely fall within the scope of Ohio State’s Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S. because of my goals for academic enrichment, leadership development, and service engagement. With the next semester approaching, I plan on continuing my involvement in my major and the scholars program as well as continuing my interest in student organizations. I look forward to the future and hope to meet more amazing people along the way.

Columbus ToDoList Part 2

For our second adventure we decided to head back into the Short north and go to Rocket Fizz on election night. There was a lot of energy in town with everyone awaiting the results so the buses were pretty packed, but we eventually made it. Although it was raining, it was quite pleasant out during our short walk to the store. Inside it was very interesting, with candy and bottled drinks filling the entire space. We decided to get a 6-pack, 2 for each, of soda and we all picked out our favorites as we looked at all the different types of candy. After leaving Rocket Fizz we decided to grab dinner at Chipotle so we got our burritos, sat down, cracked open our new sodas and enjoyed our meals.

Next we decided to complete the locations in the Short north and went to Whit’s Frozen Custard. This was by far my favorite adventure that we had. We again took the COTA down into the Short north and walked over to Whit’s. I got a cup of Caramel Pecan Custard and would 10/10 recommend it. We enjoyed our treats in the nice atmosphere of the store although my seat was broken which is why I am so short in the picture. After, we walked across the street to Melt where we had a delicious meal. I enjoyed this adventure very much and would definitely recommend both locations. They had great service, a great atmosphere, and great food and we all returned home very happy.

For our fourth experience we decided to venture away from the Short north and went to Graeter’s Ice Cream. Since it wasn’t accessible by bus we decided to toke an uber there. I enjoyed the atmosphere in the store but was not thrilled about its inconvenient location. Once we got there it was pretty late but its never too late for ice cream. I decided to get a brownie sundae which was delicious. They had a better assortment of flavors than Jeni’s and fit my taste better. After we left, we decided do walk over to a bus stop instead of getting another uber. It turned out to be freezing, but we braved the cold and saved money. Eventually we made it to the bus stop and got on a very warm bus home.

For our final adventure we decided to make our longest journey yet. We went Pattycake Bakery in the Old North. We hopped on the COTA and headed north. It was hard to spot at first because it was so small but we eventually found it. It smelled delicious inside and even though it was tightly packed it was a very attractive shop. I decided to get 2 Buckeye Bars which are peanut butter & chocolate buckeyes but it bar form. I got one for me and one for my friend and they were delicious. The bakery also had other various treats that looked delicious as well. I would definitely recommend ordering stuff from this bakery if needed. It was very friendly, had a warm atmosphere, great food, and very accessible location. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and the locations that we chose and would definitely recommend them to others and cant wait to return in the future.

Scholars Seminar 1100

For the Columbus ToDoList assignment, my roommates and I decided to tackle the Ice Cream and desserts list. It only made sense for us to pick the most delicious list out of the many choices. I am looking forward to exploring Columbus, but also trying all the types of ice cream and treats this city has to offer. I hope to learn more about the geography of the city and gain an understanding of the culture of the different neighborhoods that surround downtown. We all decided to complete the assignment together and for our first activity, we visited Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. We embarked on our journey from Haverfield and walked to the nearest #2 bus stop. Its always good to experience the craziness that is the COTA bus system. We took the bus south on high street and into the short north. After a very short walk from the bus stop, we arrived at Jeni’s. I had never been there before and was surprised by all the odd, yet delicious sounding flavors. Im a simple man, so I decided to go with the milkiest chocolate flavor. Maybe next time i’ll be more adventurous. Jeni’s really lived up to their name, because the ice cream was splendid. I look forward to eating a lot more in the future. We have already made plans for our future activities which include a trip to RocketFizz and a trip into the arena district for some pie. I am enjoying this assignment not just because of the food, but because of the whole Columbus experience that goes along with it.

I am just finishing up my first day of class on campus and I never would have thought so many people could live, work, and go to school here. Everywhere you go there is a mass of people or a line to go somewhere. I’ve always been one for the rush of city life but it still always amazes me when I see everyone out on campus going about their day.

Welcome week and move in has been a wild and adventurous few days. Im learning new areas on campus I never knew existed and getting a killed calf workout the entire time. All the welcome week events have been a lot of fun and I am looking forward to the last few events to end the week. So far my classes have been about what I expected. Large lectures with smaller recitations, but I am still getting used to the tiny desks and since I am left handed, I’ve had to alter my usual note taking routine. Other than that I have met great people in class and look forward to taking on the challenge of college together.

Prior to moving onto campus I knew OSU was big, and I knew the classes were too, yet so far I have been surprised that with the sheer amount of people here, I have still been able to connect with classmates and Professors better than I ever hoped to. Hopefully that trend continues as continue adapting to my new schedule. Speaking of which, it has been a relief to be able to go to school, and still be able to get up and move around in between classes. I have time to collect my thoughts from last class, and prepare myself for the next one which has made the college transition much easier. I am still getting used to dorm life but I have faith that I will have a routine down in no time.
