I had a wonderful first year at the Ohio State University — a year full of engaging classes, adventures in Columbus and wonderful friendships. I began academic research by joining Dr. Craig Burd’s molecular genetics research lab where I collect and analyze data to investigate the effects of environmental steroid hormones on mammary gland development and stiffness. I also grew my service interests as my Eminence cohort and I collaborated to create our class’s service initiative.
I also explored my academic interests outside of my major of biochemistry as I took wonderful French courses which led me to declare a French minor. However, my favorite course was Dr. Amanda Robinson’s Political Science course on Democratic Erosion; we read and discussed fascinating articles about how democracies fall apart, and we compared these international political systems to our own government here in the United States — analyzing the future of American democracy.
Outside of academics, I joined various student organizations. I was selected as a podcast writer for Buckeyes Racial/Ethnic Equity Awareness Centered in Healthcare, a student-run podcast that shares enlightened conversations with healthcare professionals about health disparities; I looking forward to the knowledge and connections that I will develop through this experience. I also joined Momentum Contemporary Ballet; I performed in the organizations winter and spring showcases as I grew as a dancer and developed wonderful friendships — and I also ran and was elected treasurer of MCB this spring.
I absolutely loved my first year at the Ohio State University, and I can’t wait to continue learning, researching, dancing and exploring Columbus in the fall.
