Summer in Paris!

I spent a wondering seven week studying abroad in Paris, France this summer! I love learning about French culture and speaking the French language, and so I always dreamed of studying in France ever since I began my first French class at the age of 10 in my hometown of Shaker Heights, OH.

And, my summer in Paris was magical. I commuted on the metro each day from my small, student apartment to the study abroad center located on a picturesque Parisian street, complete with delicious boulangeries, multiple fresh fruit stands and classy boutiques. I took two classes with wonderful French professors — one grammar course and one political science course, and I became nearly fluent in French as we wrote, debated and chatted in French all summer long. I explored the city whenever I was not in class — visiting museums, studying in immaculate gardens, walking through the narrow streets, and soaking in the city. The program also took our cohort on day-trips to Normandy and Giverny so that we could experience and learn about French culture in areas outside of Paris.

I learned so much as I developed meaningful relationships with my peers and teachers of different cultures and backgrounds. We gained insight and knowledge from each other’s perspectives as we discussed our family traditions, our future goals and our thoughts on social issues including racism and climate change.

I returned to Ohio State this semester with renewed energy to learn, to share my stories from my study abroad with others and to create new friendships. I will continue to find and engage in meaningful conversations of cultural exchange — working to understand and learn from my peer’s perspectives. Thanks to my experiences abroad, I am confident that I will work successfully with colleagues from all over the world. We will each approach challenges from different angles, and, as we debate our ideas, perhaps in French, our diverse team will discover various paths to innovation.

First Year

I had a wonderful first year at the Ohio State University — a year full of engaging classes, adventures in Columbus and wonderful friendships. I began academic research by joining Dr. Craig Burd’s molecular genetics research lab where I collect and analyze data to investigate the effects of environmental steroid hormones on mammary gland development and stiffness. I also grew my service interests as my Eminence cohort and I collaborated to create our class’s service initiative.

I also explored my academic interests outside of my major of biochemistry as I took wonderful French courses which led me to declare a French minor. However, my favorite course was Dr. Amanda Robinson’s Political Science course on Democratic Erosion; we read and discussed fascinating articles about how democracies fall apart, and we compared these international political systems to our own government here in the United States — analyzing the future of American democracy.

Outside of academics, I joined various student organizations. I was selected as a podcast writer for Buckeyes Racial/Ethnic Equity Awareness Centered in Healthcare, a student-run podcast that shares enlightened conversations with healthcare professionals about health disparities; I looking forward to the knowledge and connections that I will develop through this experience. I also joined Momentum Contemporary Ballet; I performed in the organizations winter and spring showcases as I grew as a dancer and developed wonderful friendships — and I also ran and was elected treasurer of MCB this spring.

I absolutely loved my first year at the Ohio State University, and I can’t wait to continue learning, researching, dancing and exploring Columbus in the fall.

About Me

Hi! I’m Madeline Price, and I am a second year Eminence Fellow majoring in biochemistry here at the Ohio State University.

I’m from Shaker Heights, Ohio — a suburb of Cleveland filled with flowering trees and old red brick buildings. As I grew up exploring natural parks near my home, I developed a strong curiosity. I asked my parents thousands of questions, and I sifted through my library’s archives as I created documentaries and podcasts. I investigated everything from how voter turnout impacts elections to why women are paid less than men — because I believe that we can discover injustice and create innovative solutions by investigating these bold questions.

I continue to follow my curiosity at the Ohio State University as I pursue a major in biochemistry. I currently conduct research in Dr. Craig Burd’s molecular genetics lab, investigating how exposure to environmental hormone disruptors affects mammary gland development and can promote breast cancer risk.

I am interested in many post-gradational paths including pursing a Ph.D., attending medical school, or embarking on a career in business or law. In whichever path I choose, I will follow my curiosity and collaborate with colleagues across the globe to conduct research and create innovative solutions.

On campus, I am a member of multiple student organizations; I am a podcast writer for BREACH, a healthcare equity organization, I am the Treasurer of Momentum Contemporary Ballet and I am also a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I dance often with Momentum Contemporary Ballet as we perform ballet works at various events around campus. Additionally, I organize fun events for the Eminence Fellows; I plan meals for the Freshman Fall Retreat, I am helping develop the Senior Symposium, and I create other fun experiences including our holiday party and a celebration of corn in the OSU corn fields. I also enjoy trying coffee shops and bakeries around Columbus, and in my spare time, I love to read novels, knit socks, bake challah, and go on long hikes with my family and my dog.
