This is a photo from a fundraiser for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society that I was involved with in high school. Our friends mom and step-mom have had leukemia and when he asked for our help to help raise money for a society that helps those with leukemia and lymphoma and does research we all jumped on. In total we raised $40,000 in 2 months. This experience impacted me and it is why I joined the Biological Sciences Scholars program, at the time I wanted to go into healthcare services, and while thats changed I am still in the bio scholars.

Year in Review

This past year I have evolved greatly as a student. Albeit, most of why I have evolved as a student has not been within my control. Firstly, I have had to adjust to zoom/online school. I have had to find the motivation to stay attentive in class, rather than playing on my phone. Secondly, I have evolved to learn at a collegiate style compared to the high school style. In high school, I was in class for 7 hours a day, whereas, in college, I am only in class for 4 or 5 hours each day. I have learned to spend more time out of class studying. I have also improved my leadership skills. Before the season was canceled, I was a leader on the baseball team. This was the first time in sports where I have been placed in a position to lead.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: While I am noy involved in any cultural organizations or interested in studying abroad, I do plan on being an active duty infantry officer and an environmental engineer. As an infantry officer I will likely deploy outside of America at some point during my time. Environmental engineering is heavily focused upon sustainability which positively affects the entire world.
  • Original Inquiry: I am unsure if I will do research, however I plan on minoring in physics, which will require advanced course work. In high school, I did research comparing different household cleaners effectiveness against three different types of bacteria. The research was cut short by the closing of school, but it was invaluable experience nonetheless.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Enrichment: In high school, I took many honors and AP classes throughout my four years. Continuing that trend into college, I have chosen engineering as my major which has many challenging courses such as high level math, physics, and advanced engineering courses. I plan on attending graduate school following my time in the Army to continue my academic enrichment.
  • Leadership Development: In the past, I have worked on leadership development through sports and student government. Now, I work on leadership through the Army along with collegiate clubs such as Scabbard and Blade and The Society of Environmental Engineers. In the future, I will continue to develop leadership skills as an officeer in the Army.
  • Service Engagement: I am a member of the Army ROTC program. I am a contracted cadet and will be enlisted in the army through 2032. I am also a member of Operation Supply Drop. Operation Supply Drop is an orginization dedicated to community service. We have beenlimited this semester, however, we have had one full event. We collected donated furniture and then set it up for an immigrant family who’s entire house was empty. I plan on being active in Operation Supply Drop throughout my time here at Ohio State.

Career

Although my career is not absolute, at the moment I want to detail infantry before becoming an army engineer, followed by retiring and going to graduate school and entering the private sector. For my career as an engineer, I am gaining most of my skills now and will be over the next few years through my course load and labs. As for my infantryman career, most of the skills I will gain at Ohio State will be from the spring FTX’s at Fort Knox. Other experiences I will gain before I am fully qualified will be a 21 week training session at Fort Benning after I graduate from Ohio State. Some skills that I have already developed through high school and in my first semester of college will also play an important role in my career, such as my time management skills from juggling being a student, an athlete and a club member. Another, potentially less valuable skill, is the ability to wake up early. In high school, I would have to lift at 5:30 for football, and now in college I wake up at 5:10 for physical training or lab. Finally,  another skill that I hope to develop throughout college is to improve my computer skills. It is one of my weak points and constantly weighs me down in programming class.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen.
