Maintaining Motivation

And here it is, the end of another school year quickly approaches. With so much information absorbed within just a few short weeks it’s crazy to think of all the useful information we can take with us in our everyday lives.

Motivation this time of year can be quite hard to come across as burn out becomes a real factor. The one positive is that the weather is changing, it has become warmer and sunnier outside meaning a change of pace and scenery. When studying for finals or finishing those last few assignments, and no matter what you cannot seem to find the motivation to complete them, find a change of pace by opening a window, sitting on a porch, or studying outside. As I type this post I am actually sitting on a bench swing, in sunny, 84 degree weather. I have been able to find some enjoyment in the completion of my work.

This time also leads into the importance of personal well-being. Stress can be at an all time high and many things that would not bother you may start too. Take a deep breath, take breaks as needed, and really reflect on mental health as a whole. Use the resources you have available including friends, family, and therapist to openly talk about any stressors ext. you may be feeling and find ways to reduce them. Being open with yourself is a large way to take charge and feel confident in finals.

Searching and Researching

Hello everyone, after an eventful weekend of spring block I know most people are not ready for finals to start. As a business major I am lucky I do not find myself writing papers but for others I know that is a huge part of finals.

Conducting a paper can be a long and stressful process if you do not know how to properly research and collect material. As stated in lecture, “research involves growing your understanding of the topics and relationships; it should grow out of your curiosity, encourage your skepticism, and lead to more questions.”

When writing your paper there are two different things you should be concerned about, searching and researching. When you research you are critically looking at the quality of information presented to you. You want to mold and see how the information you read pertains to the topic you are writing about. You will know what is important and what sticks out based on the research question you should propose at the start of your paper. Other questions that arise during your paper fall into the category of searching. When you ask yourself a question based on your research topic chosen there should be a definitive yes or no answer. There should be information that backs up your claim, not opinion based information that you draw on your own.

Web Enhanced Learning and Viewing Strats

Hello everyone, it comes that time a week again to discuss some ways to better yourself in the classroom and out. In almost every class students are sat down, lectured to on material, and expected to take notes. Sometimes these notes are taken on paper but, in the case of almost all Ohio State students they are taken on an I pad. I have learned some strategies when taking I pad notes and thought this could be a good little post to share those tips.

So, on my I Pad I have notability downloaded and use that as my primary source to take notes. It allows students free access to lots of great tips and tools. In the start of the semester I create a sub section within the app for each class I am taking and color code them fun colors. Once I start taking notes I pick a color that is bold and vibrant for the title. Then below I choose a more subtle color for any supporting information. I choose to underline and highlight any important vocabulary and dates so they stick out when it comes time to study. I also like to add pictures of any diagrams that are included in the learning. This is so much easier than with paper notes as you can snap a picture and then add it directly into the note.

Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strats Blog Post

Hello everyone, hope all is going well with school as finals approach. Along the lines of finals I know many students that turn towards the use of online websites to help them with studying and learning course material. This module in a learning Strats class I am taking actually went over some cool information rewording that exact topic. As stated in class on lesson material slide 2 “technology can provide you with a variety of ways to organize and engage with what you read.” First and foremost when you first start learning material it is important to do a couple of things to improve memory retention. The first can be highlighting important information, jotting down mnemonic devices, or pausing to go over important information with out a guide from the readings. After completing readings we then move into memorizing what we have just learned. This can be done through many routes such as avoiding heavy multitasking when memorization is taking place and implementing your mnemonic devices into your active studying. Lastly you can take all these things and apply them into a computer program like quiz-let. Quiz-let allows the user to create digital, on the go, flash cards that can be used for practice and memorization, really allowing for information to be drilled in before a large test or exam.

Efficiency in the Digital World

Hello everyone, in this weeks module we discussed some ways to become more efficient in a world that has been quickly evolving with technology. Now, I know a lot of you probably struggle with using your phone at inappropriate times… I know I do. But, learning when and how to use your phone in situations can actually help you create a more time manageable work flow. For example, let’s say I am starting my classes for a new semester, I can whip out my phone and start a google calendar. In this calendar I can add in all my class times as well as my upcoming assignments, slap a note into my phone to check my google calendar daily and thee we have it.. A way to keep up with my school work on a day to day basis. Some other tactics we talked about requiring time management always led back to many students falling into the same habits of checking their phone and getting sucked into an endless cycle of phone time over work time. Now, to combat this one tip I can give is to find a friend, one that would not distract you, and give them you phone. Tell them to have fun and allow the to his your phone in their room. With this tactic you can not find you phone and must now work on your assignment with little to no distractions.
