Wexner Center of Performing Arts

The Wexner Center of Performing Arts welcome party occurred on the 28th of September, and I attended it with my friend Bella. The event was based on bringing students together to celebrate the arts at the Ohio State. The walls were covered in works done by Ann Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, and Maya Lin. There were countless brightly colored essays done by Hamilton filling the inside of the building. I have never seen so many words concentrated in one place.

The arts are a large part of every culture. It is the way in which one can express themselves, and those innermost feelings that at times are hard to explain. Arts give a huge insight into the true lives of people in a certain community. The event related to IA because of its focus on the arts. Hamilton, Holzer, and Lin presented not only their own perspective, but also the perspective of their cultures and communities and how they relate to the world around them,

Personally, I have always loved the arts, especially singing, dancing, and drawing. Although this event did not necessarily adhere to those aspects of the arts, it was a nice reminder about the opportunities that are out there for me. Even though I am majoring in the Sciences, that does not instantly bind me to one specific path. The Wexner Center of Performing Arts is a place open for those who want to if not pursue, at least appreciate the arts as a whole.

Professional and Graduate School Fair

The involvement fair which occurred on September 10th 2019, was an focused on showcasing different professional and graduate programs at The Ohio State and in other universities. The fair was located at the Ohio State Union, and it began at 12:30 pm.

As an individual who is planning on going into professional school, this fair was an important source for me to know what qualities will make me a well equipped applicant for Dental School at The Ohio State University or any other university. The fair answered several of my questions related to the course work I will be completing in the upcoming years. My main questions going into the fair were, if I should switch my major, what are the best minor to take as pre-dental student, and how competitive is the application process. Thanks to all of the responses that I received about these questions, I was able to  paint a clearer picture of what I should be focusing on going forward in my academics.

The involvement fair for professional and graduate programs helped me have a greater understanding of what is required of me as a dental school applicant. The fair had a strong correlation to my academic, professional, and personal goals because Dental School is one of the main parts of my plan for the future.

Community Commitment

ReStore is a habitat for humanity organization that specializes in taking in used or extra house ware from larger corporations, and then selling them off at low prices. The IA Scholars program assisted the ReStore employees on August 24, 2019. The group who attended was led by a second year IA Scholar, and the group consisted of around twelve participants.

There are thousands of immigrants who arrive in he United States with nothing in hand and searching for a better life. Humanity organizations specialized in creating a more affordable environment for these new Americans. ReStore is able to get these families started on building their lives in the United States, by providing them with equipment to create a home of their own. Therefore, IA Scholars is strongly associated with the work and the message that ReStore is working towards. IA Scholars focus on understanding and relating to the world as a whole, with all of its unique cultures. Welcoming international immigrants and helping them build their lives in the Unites States is the way in which ReStore relates to IA.

Helping small non profit organizations, such as ReStore, allows one to take a step back and appreciate what they have been given. As a child of immigrants, I hear stories about how much they gave up to come to the United States, and the hundreds of struggles that they had to face every day to allow me to be where I am today. I have a tremendous amount of respect for humanity organizations because they help families like mine to start up, live a new life, and succeed in ways that seemed unimaginable before the move.
