Identification notes: The primary branches are upturned and as the tree matures, the secondary branches become pendulous. The bark is scaly and sap is sometimes visible. The cones are long and relatively long and thin. The needles are whorled around the stems, and less pointed than the blue spruce (Note that hemlock and fir species have needles in opposite pairs, rather than whorled around the stem).
