To complete my second year Health Science Scholars Service requirement, I completed a more consistent volunteer activity. I volunteered through an organization on campus called, Smiles With Style. Every other Sunday afternoon, I would volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house in Columbus, Ohio. I played with the children there and visited with their parents. I am now the president of this organization, so it very near and dear to my heart. In addition to this activity, I helped with the Ohio State College of Dentistry Interviews, among other various events.
Second Year Service Project
Service
To complete my first year Health Science Scholars Service requirement, I completed an array of service. I volunteered frequently at My Family Pantry, a Columbus food pantry, where we bagged and distributed produce to needy Columbus families on Saturday mornings. I also volunteered to be a tour guide for the Ohio State College of Dentistry interviews in the Autumn semester. I helped clean the Garden of Hope, an organic garden for the James Cancer hospital patients, and I helped the Red Cross recruit individuals to give blood at blood drives held at the College of Dentistry. Lastly, one of my most life changing events was when I took a trip to St. Lucia and volunteered in the St. Jude’s Dental Clinic over Spring Break. Completing service really has shaped me into a better person and I plan to continue to do service for others throughout my life.

Year in Review
Looking at freshman year as a whole, it has been a very good experience. With college, there comes an immense amount of change and with this change comes discomfort. However, if one can have the correct mindset then they will persevere and overcome such challenges. I want to give a few pieces of advice for when someone begins college. Firstly, it is entirely normal to feel homesick and lonely. When you reach this point take a deep breathe and realize everything is going to be okay. Then go talk to some people you have met and get out of your room. Secondly, make sure you find things that interest, you! Take advantage of the involvement fair and find a club that will help your Ohio State experience be unique to you. Thirdly, go into college with the attitude of: I have absolutely nothing to lose. I personally had this mentality and it has benefited me in so many ways. When it comes to your studies, do your best, but make sure you realize that your brain will get tired and you physically can not study the entire time. So take breaks and go have some fun with your friends. Lastly, for your first year understand that there will be times that you face adversity and understand that you must roll with them. Do your best to not fall to pieces; everything will work out in the end.
From the first few days of college until now, a few days until the semester comes to a close, I have changed. I have became more independent and self-sufficient. I have faced adversity such as failing organic chemistry quizzes and exams and have learned that life will go on and that it will be okay. Although I have faced adversity scholastically, I have always excelled and achieved very good grades in other subjects of college. I have learned that I have interests in things that I expected myself not to like because of college. Over the course of this year, I have became very involved in my clubs and organizations. I have gained so many valuable experiences and connections through The Ohio State University and I can not wait to see what my next years at this school will bring.
About Me
Hello. I am Lauren Place a junior from Wapakoneta, Ohio. Wapakoneta is a small town located in northwest Ohio and is home of Neil Armstrong. While in high school I was very involved in extracurriculars. I spent some of my time playing varsity soccer, diving, and cheering on our basketball team. I was also a member of National Honor Society, the Octagon Club, the French Club, and a member of the Ohio Extreme Soccer club. While attending the Ohio State University, I am majoring in Health Sciences and minoring in Biology. I have became involved with a number of differing activities on Ohio State’s campus. I am an active member of the Ohio State University Health Science Scholars program, the Pre-dental club at Ohio State, Alpha Gamma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and the treasurer and now president for the Smiles With Style club. I enjoy volunteering and aiding underprivileged people. I also enjoy working with children in a variety of ways. Every year I am the assistant coach a youth soccer team in Wapakoneta. Additionally, I volunteer at the local middle school. I am employed by Alvetro Orthodontics located in Sidney and Tipp City Ohio. I hope to attend Dental School in the future, and continue my education with a specialty following the completion of Dental School.
