Dr. Barbara Piperata

IMG_1550Welcome to my research site

My research applies an evolutionary and a critical biocultural perspective to the study of maternal-child health. I am interested in how socio-cultural factors shape the way people interact with their environment and how these interactions shape their health. I conduct field-based research in Latin America including in the Amazon Basin and Atlantic Coast forests of Brazil and in Nicaragua. Details on my specific research topics and related publications can be found by clicking on the link “Research Projects” at the top of this page. I co-direct the Human Biological Anthropology Laboratory (HBAL). We offer undergraduate and graduate students international research opportunities and access to lab facilities to conduct original research. I also direct the new Medical Anthropology BA & BS degree program.
