About Me

My name is Emily Pina (Pina is the Spanish word for pineapple so you may recognize me as the student with countless pineapple shirts and accessories). I am a first year student at The Ohio State university and while I have yet to declare my major I am on the premed track. I look forward to furthering my education and increasing my exposure to the health field but I was first drawn to the Scholars program by the service component vital to the success of each Health Science Scholar. I believe that serving others as a scholars family will provide a chance for us to bond, network, make educational discoveries, and most importantly support to the community of Columbus. I have been associated with many service organizations throughout my life but I am drawn most to the Special Olympics Community. For the past ten years I have had the privilege of assisting at the Ohio State Special Olympics Summer Games. Athletes participating in these games first qualify at the regional and district level before competing on our campus. I enjoy working with each of these passionate athletes year after year and look forward to acting as the 2016 State Special Olympic Softball Throw Event Director at which point I will be the youngest in Ohio holding my title. In addition to volunteering with the Special Olympics I am employed by Les Wexner who is well know around campus. I work in the childcare facility of the New Albany Country Club which Mr. Wexner opened in 1992. My time with the Country Club and the Special Olympics has confirmed my desire to work with children in the healthcare field. I learn best when confronted with hands on experiences such as caring for Special Olympians and engaging club members at work therefore I hope to earn an internship at Children’s hospital during my undergraduate years. I am excited to learn and grow with the Health Science Scholars Program this year as I get to know my fellow scholars.
