Market Steer Tagging Sat., Dec. 14

Market steer tagging and weigh-in will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 8:00 – 10:00 am at the beef barns on the fairgrounds. (A “bad-weather” date has been set for Monday, December 16 from 5 – 7 pm.)

This year, all forms will be completed ON-SITE!

Join us on Saturday, March 30 to dive into your 4-H projects!  Choose from four morning sessions and four afternoon sessions. THANK YOU to the First Presbyterian Church for a grant to help fund this year’s clinic! Thanks to that sponsorship, the cost is only $5 per member. (If that amount is cost-prohibitive for your family, please reach out to our office.) Besides learning about your project requirements, and completing learning activities, each participant will take home something to help them with their project completion! See session details on the flyer below.

Space is limited, so be sure to register as soon as possible, before the sessions fill up! Register by Friday, March 22 at: go.osu.edu/pikeprojectclinic

Please note, we only have space for the 4-H members, so parents should plan to drop off their children for the clinic and pick them up at the conclusion. This clinic is not open to Cloverbuds or non-4-H members.

Also, a separate Cake Decorating Project Clinic is being planned this year as well. Watch for details coming soon!

Livestock Quality Assurance Opportunities

q

All youth who plan to exhibit a food animal at the Pike County Fair or the Ohio State Fair must annually attend or complete a quality assurance program, or they may pass a test based on the appropriate skill level for their age (twelve to fourteen or fifteen to eighteen) under the supervision of Ohio State University Extension or Ohio agricultural education before exhibiting terminal or partial terminal market livestock, including Market beef, market swine, market lambs, market goats, market poultry, market rabbits, lactating dairy cattle and lactating goats in a junior livestock show. Youth who pass the test will be exempt from annual quality assurance re-certification until they move to the next age bracket or they are no longer a junior exhibitor (nineteen years of age or older on January 1).

Attend one of these FREE in-person trainings held at the Pike County Fairgrounds, 311 Mill Street, Piketon

  • Thursday, December 28, 2023:  IN-PERSON starting at 3:00 p.m. at Art Hall
  • Thursday, February 22, 6:00 p.m. at Art Hall
  • Thursday, March 12, p.m. 6:00 p.m. at Art Hall
  • Tuesday, April 16, 6:00 p.m. at Rabbit Clinic and QA at Multi-Purpose Building
  • Tuesday, April 23, 6:00 p.m. at Poultry Clinic and QA at Art Hall

Can’t make it to one of the above Quality Assurance trainings?

You can complete your Quality Assurance training online by May 31 at the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) website. YQCA is a national multi-species quality assurance program. There is a $12 fee for the online QA training that is payed online when enrolling in the YQCA training. The fee is not refundable and not reimbursable. After completion of the online YQCA program, you must download your completion certificate submit it to the Pike County Extension Office by June 1. You can print your completion certificate and bring it to the Extension Office, or you can attach the pdf of the completion certificate to an email and send to Julie Evans at evans.1243@osu.edu.

QUALITY ASSURANCE:  TEST-OUT OPTION

Monday, February 19, 1-6 p.m. at Extension Office (Come any time during that time frame)

Guidelines:

  • Youth ages 12-14 who pass the test with a score of 70% or higher can test out of their annual QA program for up to 3 years. The passing of this test only exempts attendance at QA until the member reaches a 4-H age of 15. At that time, they would take the 15-18 year-old test.
  • Youth ages 15-18 years of age who pass the QA test with a score of 70% or higher can test out of their annual QA program permanently.
  • All ages are based on a member’s 4-H age (the age that they are as of January 1 of the current year).

If you would like resources to study for the QA test, visit the Quality Assurance Section of our webpage.

Open House May 7 at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp

Have you or your children ever wanted to take a sneak peek at what campers experience when attending summer camp?  On Sunday, May 7, from noon to 4 p.m., Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp will be holding its annual Open House at the at camp, located just north of Jackson, Ohio at 1362 Caves Rd. This event will give you the opportunity to explore the camp and learn about the many summer camping opportunities there. Many Extension professionals, camp staff, volunteers, and teen counselors will be on hand that afternoon to provide you with a taste of what summer camp has to offer. Or, you might be interested in checking out the Camp facilities as a potential venue for your wedding or other special event.

Information will be available regarding this summer’s 4-H camps and camp facility rentals, and several traditional camp activities will be scheduled throughout the day, including fishing, archery, hiking, crafts, and more. Guided hikes will leave for either Boone or Canter’s Caves on the half hour through 3 p.m., and the pond will be open for fishing from noon until 1:30 p.m. At 1:30 p.m., the paddle boats will take center stage on the pond. Visitors will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills at archery; take a walking tour of the camp’s facilities; or play basketball or miniature golf. A light lunch will be available at no charge from noon to 3:30 p.m., and the camp’s canteen will be open for the purchase of camp items.

Upon arriving at camp, all guests must register in the Main Lodge before heading out on their adventures. Hikers should wear close-toed shoes and dress for the weather. The hikes will be somewhat strenuous. The Open House will culminate with a live auction at 3:30 p.m. with proceeds benefitting the camp.

In addition to the live auction, there will also be a silent auction, which will close at 3:45 p.m., and a kids’ auction. Kids will be able to purchase a strip of tickets to drop into cups for the items they want a chance to win. Winners will be drawn at 4 p.m. Auction items are donated by Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp friends and alumni, members of the camp’s Board of Directors, and 4-H members and advisors from the 10 county 4-H programs that own and operate the camp, including Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike, Scioto, and Vinton. The camp is also home to the Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Program and the State 4-H Special Needs Camp.

Visiting Canter’s Cave Camp during the open house would be a great activity for a club meeting or family outing!

Membership in 4-H is not required for youth to attend 4-H summer camps. For more information about the upcoming Open House or about summer camping opportunities, contact the Extension office at 740-289-4837.

Farm to Fork Competitions Expanded for 2023

Market Lamb and Market Goat Farm to Fork competitions have been added for the 2023 Pike County Fair, in addition to the Market Hog Farm to Fork contest.  The Farm to Fork competitions provide youth with real-world experiences in carcass quality, yield, and value.  If an exhibitor wishes to participate in the Farm to Fork competition for their market species, they must indicate that on their animal tag-in form at the May 6 tag-in day at the fairgrounds. This is the only time entries will be received.  There are 10 spots available for market lambs, 1o spots for market goats, and 20 spots available for market hogs.   If more entries are received than there are spots available, participants will be selected by a random drawing to fill the spots.

Farm to Fork market animals will show in their regular classes at the Pike County Fair and the exhibitor will go through the Junior Fair Sale to receive sale ring premium.  They will NOT receive the stockyard bid; rather, it is the responsibility of the participant to market the meat from the animal or use for home consumption.

All animals entered in the Farm to Fork contest are terminal and will be trucked to Just Meats for harvest. It is the responsibility of all Farm to Fork exhibitors to pay all processing fees for their animals.

A date will be established to view carcasses with a meats specialist and learn how dressing percent, yield grade, and quality grade are determined.

Prizes will be awarded based on carcass value.
