Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I plan to expand my global awareness by taking Maymesters to study abroad in countries with a variety of social, political, and economic circumstances. My interest in health care outreach leads me to inquire about the health care systems of different countries, and how they are affected by the political and socioeconomic statuses of their countries. I am in the MEDLife club at OSU, so I plan to go on a brigade trip to provide health care and service to an underprivileged community in Peru, Honduras, or others.
  • Original Inquiry: I’m lucky enough to already be doing original inquiry in my first semester. For my Environmental History class, I am writing an opinion editorial, that I may submit for publishing, in which I am researching environmental justice and gentrification surrounding the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. My research has covered historical newspaper articles, environmental groups from several decades, and current policy and plans for the city. I found it challenging not only to gather information relevant to this topic, but to synthesize it in a way that creates a powerful and well proven argument.
  • Academic Enrichment: One reason why I chose Ohio State was for their honors college. I looked at several honors colleges, but few held their students to the same academic standards as OSU. Whereas for some honors colleges honors courses are optional, at OSU I’m required and encouraged to take rigorous and high level courses, honors or otherwise. Taking these higher level courses has required more critical thinking and skills from me, such as writing in a variety of genres, from theatrical performance review to psychological study analysis.
  • Leadership Development: I left my home a week early to attend the RLEAD program at OSU. We attended workshops on diversity inclusion, encouraging cooperation, and fostering a healthy environment for our peers. I learned about the involved living community and how my energy and voice can create a positive environment for my dorm. In addition, I am getting very involved in the OSU RedCross Club. I am the co-lead for our recruitment cohort for November, the month in which we hold blood drives everyday in a race against University of Michigan to collect more donations. I hope to join the executive board next year, and take on even more responsibility and become more involved in expanding the activities of the club in to fundraising for RedCross disaster relief.
  • Service Engagement: I am currently an intern for the RedCross, and I volunteer 10 hours a week to recruit for and run blood drives. Through MEDLife, I volunteer in the community and fund raise for brigade trips to aid in health and service to underprivileged communities internationally. I am interest in becoming an intern with PROs, Peers Reaching Out, or other mental health health and suicide prevention efforts at OSU in the next semester. My career interest is running a health outreach organization, so my passion right now is exploring service opportunities, especially opportunities that explore all aspects of health.
