End of the Year Reflection

My freshman year at OSU was definitely one I won’t forget, and I am so glad Architecture Scholars was part of it. I met most of my friends through Scholars and I don’t think my year would have been nearly as great if not for scholars. Jessica really helped me through scheduling and I knew if I ever had a problem, that I would be comfortable going to her. I am so glad that I did scholars this year and I loved being a part of this program. This program was also great to connect to the upperclassmen through the mentor portion of this, and my mentors Joy and Sophia were great. I’m sad this year had to end early, but I’m so grateful for how well it went when I was there!

Here is my Spring Project!

Spring Semester Project

For the Spring Semester Scholars Project I plan to research and focus on the different species of trees and how to identify them. This aligns with the GOALS of Scholars because it encompasses Original Inquiry, through the research of the trees, and Academic Enrichment, because I am learning something for my major, Landscape Architecture. My major directly applies to the research of trees because it will be helpful to know what kind of trees will be best for a certain landscape. jmI plan to begin working on the project over winter break by learning how to sketch trees and reading about the different types of trees. The first step I need to take is acquiring materials to help me research like books and online sources. My second step would then be to begin my research and begin sketching trees. Throughout the semester I also plan on photographing trees and then identifying them. I plan to meet those first steps by at least the end of the first month of second semester.

Columbus To Do List Part 2

I choose the theme of art and music for my Columbus To Do List. I choose this because I am passionate about art and I was excited to explore the art around Columbus. For part one I visited the Pizuti collection and the Mona Lisa mural in the Short North. For the second part of the To Do List I choose to visit the Columbus Museum of Art, Gravity murals, and the rare books and manuscripts libraries showing of photograph collections. These three sites fit within the theme of art and music. The photographic collections was located in Thompson library but was a limited time showing of some famous photographs. It included old callotypes to new modern photographs done by photographers like Man Ray and Harry Callahan. Through looking at this photography in person I got to really understand the photograph and I learned about the callotypes and gelatin silver prints. I really enjoyed seeing all the different photography, with the great range of old and modern photography and I included a picture of my favorite photograph that was displayed. The Gravity Murals were located along the bottom of an apartment complex and added wonderful art to a great area. Along with the murals there is also sculptural trees and artful graffiti art on the ground. This interactive and interesting art space was a very fun place to visit. My favorite place that I visited was the Columbus Museum of Art, which of course showcases lots of impressive art, but I loved seeing all the different artwork from different times along with the impressive architecture of the museum itself. I learned a lot about artists and got to appreciate their work along the way.  I  would  definitely  recommend  visiting  the  Columbus  Museum  of  Art  to  anyone,  even  if  not  doing  this  specific  project  because  it  is  filled with  wonderful  art  that  is inspiring  and  educational  as  well. Both of my favorite spots that I visited were part of the Columbus Museum of Art, as the Pizuti collection is a branch of the museum. This has lead me to want to explore more of the art in Columbus, specifically galleries around Columbus. Soon I plan to see the galleries in the Short North, and hope to go on the gallery hop next month. Through this project I learned that Columbus, although a newer city than cities like Cleveland, has tons of fun and inspiring art to enjoy, and a lot of it is free to students of The Ohio State University. If someone else was endeavoring to complete this same list I would encourage them to visit the museums and really get to see a lot of the gallery space, I would especially encourage them to go to the Columbus Museum of Art (on a Sunday if possible, because it is free), because even though it is a longer bus ride away, it is definitely worth it and a place that I will visit much more in my time here at Ohio State. I am very glad I choose art and music because it has opened me up to the wonderful galleries right here in Columbus.

Columbus To Do List: Part 1

I choose the theme of “Art and Music” for my Columbus to do list, because I really want to explore more art and especially the abundant amount of art right here in Columbus. I am most looking forward to visiting the Columbus Art Museum because I have never been before but have heard great things. I believe that this choice of theme will not only help me to see more of Columbus, but also to appreciate and. understand art more, which will also be helpful in the creative field that I am in. I hope that this assignment gives me a greater appreciation for the art around me and might even help inspire me in my creative endeavors. So far I have visited the Pizutti Collection and many different murals in the Short North. The Pizutti collection is a branch of the Columbus Museum of Art, so it was very  impressive and I loved the art I got to see there. Although the Pizutti collection is a smaller gallery it was filled with great art and created for a great experience. I am excited to revisit the Pizutti Collection because it is not permanent galleries and therefore there will be new things to see, also there was an installation being put in when I visited, so I am excited to revisit when that is ready for the public. The murals in the Short North, including the Mona Lisa were amazing to see in that so much detail is put in on such a large scale. I loved seeing the variety of murals throughout the Short North. I am very excited to continue this to do list and see more wonderful art!

Mentor Interview

On Wednesday I met with my mentor Sophia at the KSA and we had a great talk! My mentor and I discussed a variety of things including how my first weeks had been, how my floor was, and what I can expect in the upcoming years at Knowlton. I also expressed to my mentor some of my hesitations with my major and she reassured me that everyone feels that way. I learned that a great class for me to take would be the intro to programming that is taught by one of the studio instructors, and I learned that studio will be very different from this year and I shouldn’t doubt myself from how I have been doing in studio. What was most interesting to me was when we talked about my major and what classes would be most beneficial because I had really been wondering about that. After this first meeting I would be very comfortable in reaching out to Sophia, we had an awesome interview!

First Impressions

My first impressions of Ohio State really stem from what I experienced in welcome week and the scholars program that I am a part of. Welcome week was a great week for me filled with a busy schedule which greatly helped me in the transition to college. The busy schedule made it harder to miss home, easier to meet new people, and it really was a great way to get to know the Columbus, the campus, and all that they have to offer. Architecture, Landscape, and City Scholars was another program that really helped my transition into college, because of the events held with scholars and just the sense of community and connection that I felt with my fellow scholars. Both Scholars and Welcome week left me with a really great and promising first impression of The Ohio State University and I am so excited to spend my next for years on such an exciting campus, with such great people.
