April 1, 2020: CSP 2020 Recap / Planning Ahead

We reviewed our PICC presentation and overall experience at the Conference on Statistical Practice 2020 in Sacramento, CA in February.  We then discussed potential topic ideas for future meetings.  From this meeting, we set up the tentative meeting schedule for the rest of the year. Due to COVID-19, all meetings have been moved to a virtual format until further notice.

 

May 6, 2020: Preparing Annual Review Documents

We discussed changes to the review process and general criteria / suggestions for preparing our annual review documents.  Our discussion was led by Guy Brock (CFB Deputy Director) and Erinn Hade, Lai Wei, and Lianbo Yu (CFB Program Leaders).

 

June 17, 2020: P-values

Based on the article by Greenland et al (2016), we discussed various issues involving the use and interpretation of p-values.  A document containing references and other resources regarding p-values from Center members is available in the “Resources” section.

 

July 22, 2020: Tips & Tricks

Members of the Center shared tips and tricks for R, SAS, and Stata programming; general statistical resources and references; and how to manage your inbox.  Contributions (website links, code and examples) are located in the “Resources” section.

 

August 19, 2020: Grant Biosketch Content & Format, Part I

We discussed how to write the Personal Statement and Contributions to Science sections of the NIH biosketch, motivated by examples and suggestions from Center members.  Examples are located in the “Resources” section.

 

September 9, 2020: Grant Biosketch Content & Format, Part II

We continued our discussion of the NIH biosketch, moving on to discussing MyBibiliography, Resources, and Letters of Support.  Examples are located in the “Resources” section.

 

October 28, 2020: Estimating Statistical Support/Funding Strategies

We reacted to the article “Estimating Percent Effort” by Śaunak Sen and the three principles he outlined: (1) equating percent effort to number of projects you can handle out of 100% (e.g. 20 projects at 5%); (2) adjusting total hours per week/month/year for time spent not attributable to a specific project  (e.g. 1600 instead of 2080); (3) higher percent effort translating to faster response times and dedicated time slots.
