Year in Review

Coming into my first year of college I was terrified.  I was a quiet person, moving three hours away from home.  I was worried about making friends and being away from my family.  Now I can’t wait to come back to Columbus in the fall!  The scholars program has really helped me find my group of friends, who have made my freshman year as great as it was.  They have encouraged me to be more outgoing and always support me in whatever I do.  Throughout freshman year I have many memories from football games, the scholars Chicago trip, studio, BuckeyeThon, the fashion schau, my London trip, and Cincinnati, just to name a few.  These experiences helped me become more independent and try new things outside of my comfort zone.

Academically, I had to make adjustments.  Studio was a new concept to me, but it really taught me time management skills and to always work ahead.  Working ahead and always trying to stay ahead with work in all of my classes was something I found very valuable in all of my classes.  I was able to avoid a lot of stress by completing assignments 2 or 3 days before they were actually due.  Through this year I gained new and helpful studying habits and great time management skills.  I learned to be responsible for my own work and independence.

Artifacts

St. Paul's Dome Interior

My artifact is my sketchbook from my trip to London.  I took Aimee’s sprink break study abroad class this year and travelled to London.  This was a big step for me because it was my first trip outside of the country.  I experienced many new things, and as a result my confidence and independence in travelling were boosted.  I also learned on this trip how much I enjoy sketching, and how much more special my sketches were to me than my photos.  My trip was full of valuable experiences and has encouraged me to want to study abroad again.

About Me

Hi, my name is Megan Pettner.  I am from Darlington , PA, a small town about an hour Northwest of Pittsburgh.  I am an incoming freshman majoring in Architecture.  Some of my hobbies include running, baking, and painting.  Most of my hobbies are creative because I really like design.  I also enjoy science and math, so that is why I am really interested in architecture.  It encompasses all of my interests.  I am a quiet person, but once I get to know you I am very outgoing.  I plan on taking as many opportunities as I can to experience the world and learn new things.

So far, I have really enjoyed my time at Ohio State.  I was nervous about coming to a large university, but now I am so glad I did.  I enjoy all of my classes and have made so many friends.  I find so many opportunities here that I would not have gotten at a smaller school.  I feel that I have become a more outgoing and responsible person.

I chose the scholars program because I felt that it would make OSU seem smaller.  Not knowing anyone prior to moving onto campus, I was nervous about meeting people.  I think it is really good that I get to live with the people who have the same interests and classes as me.  I also think it is very beneficial that we get to participate in community service and other special events within the scholars group.  I think the traits of involvement, community, and friendship are being exhibited on campus due to the scholars program.
