Mentor Interview

I interviewed my mentor, Clara Hach, on September 15. She is in PSL, even though it was her third choice for a scholars program. Her favorite part of PSL was the people she has met. All of her friends she has met from PSL. She is majoring in Public Policy. She enjoys the policy part, but does not like the political aspects of the program. She is minoring in Studio Art, and her major specialization is in National Parks and Resource Management. She created the specialization herself, as that is an option for the major. In her minor, she focuses a lot on drawing and it lets her focus on a more creative aspect of her education. After college, she hopes to do National Parks policy. Clara participates in Parks and Recreation, Boo Radley Society, and Student Alumni Council. Last year, she did Bob Ross Painting Club. She is taking Geology of National Parks, Leadership in Nonprofits, Peace Studies, Causes of War, Statistics, Modern Democracy, and STEP. Her favorite class is Geology of National Parks. She is still planning on what she is going to do with her STEP grant.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

As a Scholars student, I want my time at Ohio State to be meaningful. In order to put me on the right path, I have outlined my G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement.

  • Global Awareness: Sometime during my undergraduate career here, I would like to study abroad. As I continue my studies, I would like to pick a place that will connect to what I am learning about in the classroom and further my understanding of the global community.
  • Original Inquiry: In high school, I did original research on the personalities of prosecutor characters in American media. I wanted to do a case study on an actual prosecutor’s office, but I was denied access. In college, I think it would be interesting to continue to pursue my original idea and do research on a real world environment.
  • Academic Enrichment: I am planning on pursuing a major and two minors to challenge myself while I am at Ohio State. The major I have chosen, Public Affairs, will be very beneficial to my future. I want to create policy, and this major will give me the tools to understand how to. Compounded with a law degree, I think it is a very practical route to pursue. Furthermore, I recently interned with a judge who had a background in public policy and she said it gave her a heightened understanding of the legal system. I would like to go into that same field, so my curriculum will prepare me for my future.
  • Leadership Development: Right now, I am involved with three things at Ohio State. I am in PSL Scholars, Leading Women of Tomorrow, and Parks and Rec Society. I would like to have a leadership position in one, if not more, of these clubs. I would like to be most involved in Leading Women of Tomorrow, as it is a club that focuses directly on my career aspirations.
  • Service Engagement: I am currently not involved with any service engagement, but I hope to volunteer soon. I would like to volunteer with a refugee aid organization. This social issue has been a passion of mine since high school. I think it would be very beneficial to continue to devote time to refugee aid.

About Me

Hello, my name is Isabella Petrus. I am majoring in Public Affairs, and I am considering a minor in Economics or International Relations. I want to go to law school, and I feel that these majors and minors give me practical tools to make an impact on the world. In high school, I was very involved, so I planned on doing the same in college. I am part of the Politics, Law, and Society Scholars. This scholars program allows me to get real life experience in the fields I hope to one day work in. I am a member of various organizations, such as Parks and Recreation Society and Leading Women of Tomorrow. I hope to take leadership roles in one or more of these activities. In my free time, I like to weave, hang out with my dog, and read.
