Year in Review

Global Awareness: In terms of coursework, religious studies 3680 and 2370H have both served as excellent examinations of religion and how it interacts with the world. In 3680 I engaged in lively discussions with my professors and classmates about the complicated relationships between law, religion, and secularism in the modern world, and in 2370H I was able to apply that knowledge to a more in-depth analysis of the tenets of the world’s major religions, and how they influence various types of media. Furthermore, I have had the pleasure of interacting with people of diverse backgrounds at my job at the Thompson Library Circulation Desk, both as patrons and co-workers. In only two years, I have worked with people from China, India, Mexico, and various places across the US. In the future, I plan on taking Spanish classes, with the goal of one day being fluent in the language, and I also plan to learn ASL. It’s my belief that one of the most profound steps one can take toward being a global citizen is knowing how to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Original Inquiry: I have taken Psychology 2220, 2300, and 3321H, which have all endowed me with the necessary research methodology and statistical skills to engage in psychological research. I am currently seeking a position in a cognitive psychological research lab at Ohio State, and I expect to have secured a position by Autumn 2018. I plan to engage in research for the remainder of my two years at Ohio State, having allocated my STEP funds to cover living expenses while I perform research during the summer of 2019. Finally, during my last two years I will take Psychology 4510, in which I will form my own research project in cognitive psychology.

Academic Enrichment: The classes I have taken and will take are aimed at preparing me for graduate school, and afterward a career in Human Factors Engineering. I originally chose Psychology because I realized that I naturally analyzed those around me on a daily basis. As I’ve navigated through various coursework this past year, I’ve realized my interest and strength in math. As such, my final two years of coursework will focus on cognitive psychology. Additionally, I’ve decided to pursue a minor in Computer and Information Systems to further prepare me for a masters program in Human Factors Engineering. The courses I will be taking will be challenging and intellectually stimulating, as many of them are graduate-level courses. The GE courses I have chosen were aimed at diversifying my curriculum, and thinking about people more socially and even biologically. I believe this will serve me well in my continued interactions with people of diverse backgrounds.

Leadership Development: My main leadership experience has been working as an Evening Circulation Desk Student Supervisor at Thompson Library. It has been a rewarding experience, as I’ve had the privilege of confronting the challenges and benefits of leading. I’ve learned how to help acclimate new students to their positions, correct their mistakes in an efficient yet nurturing manner, and serve as an intermediary between my supervisors and the other student assistants. That being said, I look forward to seeking out more leadership positions in my final two years at OSU by getting involved in cognitive science and psychology organizations.

Service Engagement: I will admit that my first two years I focused mainly on bettering myself so that I could reach a place where I would have the necessary tools and means to then help others. I believe that I am now at that place, and as such I am beginning to seek out volunteer opportunities at Ohio State and around the Greater Columbus Area. In the past I’ve been involved with color runs and marathons, so I hope to find opportunities similar to those in the coming months. Finally, my career experience has endowed me with excellent communication and people skills, and as such I plan to seek out volunteer experiences where I can interact with others and have a positive impacts on their lives.
