Artifacts

My second semester of my first year I took physiology and going into the class I knew it was going to be a tough semester. This class did not require any books and we had weekly exams covering the material we learned the previous week. This class required a lot of outside time spent on studying and reviewing material to prepare for the exam. This folder represents the multiple hours spent studying and preparing for the weekly exams, midterm, and final. The time spent studying for this class paid off in the end and this folder represents that energy.

About Me

Hello! My name is Roslyn Perry and I am a first-year pre-nursing major at The Ohio State University. I am from Southern Maryland and chose to attend The Ohio State University not only because of my desire to leave Maryland, but also since I received the Morrill Scholarship. My future goals include getting into the nursing program at OSU, so I can graduate with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After obtaining my BSN I hope to work in an Intensive Care Unit at a hospital for a couple of years. I then plan on going to graduate school to obtain my Doctor of Nursing Practice. From this I hope to be able to help diverse and underserved populations to make sure they are receiving the best healthcare possible. At Ohio State, I plan to join several organizations such as Nursing Students Promoting Initiatives to Reinforce Equality (NSPIRE), Buckeyethon, and Buckeye Campaign Against Suicide. These organizations will help me to grow outside of an academic role and they will be beneficial to me in the future.

Year in Review

Completing my first year of college during a quarantine due to a pandemic was unexpected, but has contributed to how much I have grown this year. Going into my first year I did not expect to learn so much about myself and grow the way that I did. I have learned a lot about myself by interacting with other scholars in class discussions, completing community service projects throughout the year, and meeting new people with so many diverse ideas. My first year has taught me so many things and I credit a lot of that to the Health Science Scholars program.

My parents moving to Japan at the beginning of the semester made me become more independent and learn how to handle situations on my own. I am grateful that I had the support of friends and scholars during this big transition that occurred in my life. I am grateful for everything that I learned this year and I am looking forward what is to come over the next three years. This first year was the foundation for my college career and what I have learned this year will be beneficial as I work to become a future health professional.

G.O.A.L.S.

In my first year at Ohio State I have completed several service projects including being a mentor for the Sista Sista Mentoring Program, raising money for Buckeyethon, and being a patient escort at the Wexner Medical Center. Over the next four years I plan to continue completing service projects especially ones that focus on mentorship. Being a mentor for the Sista Sista program allowed me to visit Northland High School in Columbus and engage in activities with a cohort of girls to help them build leadership skills and learn about future career plans. Being a mentor further made me realize that many minority students do not know about future career opportunities in health care and many other career fields. I hope that in the future I can help many minority students know that they could be great future health professions and that they are needed in these roles.
