Journal 5

I have been involved in scholars by going to different events as well as having the literal scholars class. I enjoy spending time with my friends in scholars outside of class as well as seeing them inside of class. One of the best parts of scholars is the people you meet after joining. I will continue to hang out with all my friends from scholars next semester as well as hopefully attending meetings. I am in engineering for my major and I want to take a photography class sometime in college. I would love to study abroad in France sometime but the options for engineers in studying abroad aren’t very large. I think eventually I will job shadow someone in my field to learn a bit more about everything that is included with my future job. These goals align with the g and l in goals. G being global and traveling to a foreign country through study abroad. L being leadership and learning how a job works before actually getting hired there through job shadowing. I’ll work toward this by staying focused in all of my classes and continuing to look for study abroad opportunities.

Columbus To Do List: Part 2

22 November 2016

My adventures around Columbus sparked so much curiosity to see and live in this city. After visiting the first site I appreciated how much diversity of landscape the city obtained a lot more. The first site in part two of the list was the Olentangy river trail. Even though I have been running the trail since I first came to OSU I had never truly stopped to enjoy its beauty until this assignment. Complete with its own asphalt road and road paint, the trail is just like a highway for human traffic. All along the path are trees, flowers, scenic landscapes and even cityscapes. The trail runs for thirteen miles and has tons of entrances for people to get off or on at. I would for sure go back to the river trail, in fact I do all my long runs along the trail. The next place I visited on my tour of Columbus was the Franklin Park conservatory. The bus ride to the conservatory was a little long so we decided to take an uber, it’s location was a little past downtown Columbus which is why the bus would have taken so long. My first impression of the conservatory was that it was a beautiful building with some amazing architecture. I was in love with how the building could take me to so many different places of the world without leaving Columbus at all. It starts in a cave and leads to a rainforest which leads to a desert. The plants inside were all so different and interesting. My favorite area inside the conservatory was the bonsai tree area. The super tiny versions of real trees are so fascinating and something I’d like to have inside my own dorm. I would for sure go back again and take some friends with me. The third location was Good Dale park. It’s an easy place to get to, just take a stroll down Neil and follow until you get to buttles, then park is right there. The park has many beautiful features including a pond with a fountain and a historic home. The park is beautiful and it seems that no matter what time of the year there are always people there enjoying the wide, open spaces. My favorite part about Good Dale is the abundance of dogs that always seem to be there. The fourth place I choose was the Columbus commons in downtown Columbus. This was one of my favorite places that I choose to visit. The whole thought of a grass area in the middle of sky scrapers is mind blowing to me. I love the huge contrast between city and landscape. The large grassy area is surrounded by tons of shops and even the Ohio theater.   Another great feature of the commons is the fact that they have a music venue connected to the grassy area. This assignment was one of the best I’ve had to do. It was truly a great experience and I look forward to completing the entire list. I had a friend go with me for all the places and it strengthened our friendship, so my advice to anyone else doing this list is to do it with your friends and enjoy every memory you make. I learned Columbus is a huge, beautiful city filled with lots of opportunity. I can’t wait to explore more!

Artifacts

I chose to do the Nature and Outdoor recreation list for the assignment. I throughly enjoy nature and all things associated with outdoors, so with this choice I can’t go wrong! I can’t wait to go all over columbus and see what it has to offer. I wish to gain a better appreciation for nature within a big city. I come from a small town where all of the beauty and nature comes from outside the city. So to come to columbus and all there is is city, I hope to come across beauty in unknown/ unexpected places.

To get to The Whetstone Park of Roses I first took the number two bus. Upon arrival I was attacked by a series of sensations. The sound of children running and playing around in the warm grass and the smell of fresh flowers assaulted my nose and ears. There were a bountiful array of colors attacking my eyes in the forms of flowers. The garden starts off with a wooden structure that I would assume had flowering roses during peak season. The path was paved with large blocks and was the perfect stepping stone into what felt like a Romeo and Juliet type scene. The park was filled with people just enjoying the warm sunshine and beauty that lurked around every corner. I learned that the park was dedicated on June 22, 1986. It has been alive since then and whoever takes care of it does a great job because it is still spectacular and blooming. I loved taking an easy walk around and seeing the purples and the pinks and the reds and yellows. It was a wonderful experience and I highly suggest it to anyone looking for an smooth, beautiful walk around a park filled with wonderful greenery. Be careful of bees, they didn’t do me any harm but there were plenty of them!

About Me

Ohio State is entire different world from my home town. Welcome week was a hurricane of events from convocation to the involvement fair, the entire week flew by in a frenzy of events and people. All of my classes were different from what I expected, the homework and the lectures aren’t at all like anything I am used to. Life away from home is so much different, there is so much freedom and the schedule was relatively easy to adjust to. I am not sure what I expected from college but so far I am enjoying myself and everything Ohio State has to offer.
