Spring Project

For my G.O.A.L.S Project, I have multiple ideas. My first idea is to start drop shipping with Calvin. Drop shipping would help enhance my skills in communication and leadership. It would also enhance my entrepreneurial skills. Drop shipping deals with setting up an online store. My second idea is to run a program with Aaron. We would get together and run a RA program with Simon. This would be perfect for me because I hope to be offered the RA position for the next academic school year. My third and final idea as of now, is to do a career enrichment to help my studies at OSU and my future career. This would include doing research on my field and shadowing actual construction mangers in the local area. I also hope that I can get an internship to further help my career. I hope to make a decision by the end of winter break. To help make my decision, I am going to communicate with Simon, Aaron, and Calvin over winter break. I believe all of these ideas fall under the GOALS and will better me. Drop Shipping would be the hardest idea to perform. To make the deadlines for the Project, I must complete certain task early. For the program, I would have to meet with Simon and Aaron early on to brainstorm ideas. We would also have to pick the best date and figure out the budget for the Program. For my career enrichment, I would apply for internships over the break. I would also talk to different business in the local area and try to setup dates to shadow the job. Lastly, I can improve my resume and work on technical skills that are needed for my career.

Columbus To Do List: Part 2

Our group went to multiple places for this list. Two places that I loved the most were COSI and the art museum. The other places we went were the Columbus Commons, Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, and the Scioto Mile. We went to the art museum while OUAB was holding an event. Therefore we were able to get transportation there and back and given refreshments as we looked at the exhibits. There was so much art that we ran out of time. I would definitely go back to see the rest of the exhibits and read more about the art pieces on display. The other place I really enjoyed was COSI. COSI cost $10 which was $15 cheaper than it is at COSI. COSI is meant for kids and to help them learn about science in a fun and interacting way. At points I sat there feeling as if I was too old to play around with the displays. Yet I still enjoyed myself and learned things that I didn’t know before.

My favorite exhibit at COSI was the dinosaur exhibit. COSI had a display showing multiple different species in a realistic environment. The attention to detail on the animals and the environment was amazing. Dirty Frank’s had all kinds of different hotdogs. I decided on a chili dog because I was really craving a Coney from Skyline and it was the closest I could get too. The food was delicious and all of their food were priced reasonably. The Columbus Commons and Scioto Mile were two places that we visited prior but wanted to go back to. We experienced these two places the first time in daylight. The second time, we visited after the sun had gone down. These two sites were beautiful both times and are great uses of the space. The Scioto Mile allowed for a sense of community and gave the community a place where they can bond and enjoy the outdoors. At one part of the mile, they had a water feature for kids to play in and swings for people to use. I believe that other cities around the U.S. should look at Columbus and incorporate green spaces like the Columbus Commons and Scioto Mile.

I really want to visit the National Veterans Memorial and Museum. I remember talking about it during our Columbus tour at the beginning of the semester. I hope to get an opportunity to go by the end of next semester. If someone is looking to do the Downtown To Do List, I would recommend going to COSI and the Art Museum. I would also recommend checking out the Veterans Memorial because it is right next to COSI and would be a interesting experience. I believe that the list is well rounded and give you a lot of options. I also believe that you should try to do things that aren’t on the list. There are numerous restaurants on downtown that are amazing. It is also filled with parks and beautiful walkways along the river. Downtown Columbus is a beautiful place and is a perfect way to spend your evening or weekend.

FOTOshop Project

This project involved finding a site in Columbus that is being unused/underused. We than had to come up with ideas to revitalize this space while thinking about the community. Our group decided to pick an abandoned building in the Short North. Our idea was to create a bowling alley/food pantry.

Columbus To Do List: Part 1

Aidan, Tyler, Jose, and I decided to do the downtown list together. One place that we went to was Dirty Franks Hotdog Palace. The place I Am most excited to go to is Cosi but it is possible that we won’t go to that place. If that is the case the next place that I am excited for is the art museum. I hope to grow a bond with Aidan, Tyler and Jose while doing our list. I also want to get the chance to explore downtown Columbus and see what it has to offer. For our first trip we decided to go after the sun had went down. The city during the night is very beautiful and peaceful. The next time we accomplish thigs on our list I want to go during daylight so we can experience as much as possible. One experience that we have already had was at Dirty Franks. The environment in the restaurant was amazing. To go along with the environment, the service and food were perfect. It is now my favorite that is off campus so far until I try more places to eat. We as a group had a great time and I enjoyed every second of the trip.

Journal #2

I decided to meet with Declan from my Scholars Mentor Family. The meeting we had together was laid back but was also helpful in figuring out a lot of these going on in my life and changes that I didn’t expect going into college. I have also talked to Declan a lot before the mentor meeting when we were volunteering together at Goodale Park. I have really grown to enjoy hanging out with Declan and enjoyed lunch with Declan and Evan after community service. They are great people and were a joy to work with.

In the meeting the main thing that Declan and I talked about was my interest in changing my major. For the past couple of weeks I have had the interest to switch from civil engineering and go into the major of construction systems management. Declan wasn’t the only person that I talked to about this decision though. I was able to find support through Simon, my sister, my parents, my advisors, and lastly Declan. The biggest problem I had was making sure I was making the correct decision and not jumping into something that I could also not like. He helped me work through my thoughts and the curriculum to see that the major sparked interest in me. He also pointed out that I should  look online at the basic information of what a construction manger does, the job growth outlook, and lastly the salary. Obviously you can’t look primarily at salary and job security only, because you have to make sure you also like the field itself. Still you want to make sure that when you get out of college you will be able to find a job and have a stable income to sustain yourself.

The most interesting topic that we talked about together was our hometown and just the environments. With me being from Cincinnati and Declan being from Texas, there is a lot of differences on life in these areas. It was really cool to hear about how their lifestyles differ but also how they are still similar to the lifestyles I am use to.  We also talked about how our college year has been going so far and all of the challenges we have faced but also the fun experiences we have had this semester. I don’t have any future plans to meet with Declan in the next weeks, but I would definitely like to set up something like going out for lunch and talking to each other.

Journal #1

I believe that welcome week was an exciting time that allowed us to get costumed to this new environment and made the transition into college much easier. With this came the beginning of the semester and a heavy workload on my plate. My math and physics class are just like I expected. They both are classes that are hard and require numerous hours to study and complete homework. Luckily I have found people that I can study/do homework with which has made the process faster and more pleasurable. The scholar program has been a nice feature of OSU because we have already done simple tasks like go to downtown Columbus which was really beautiful and had a lot to offer. I haven’t had time to go back downtown but definitely want to go back while the weather is still warm and dry. Overall I really love Ohio State’s Campus and the scholar program so far.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

My hometown is Fairbanks, Alaska. I only lived in this town for a couple years before I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where I still live to this day. Most of my family still lives in Alaska so I try to visit as much as possible. I am pursuing the major of Civil Engineering and at the moment, I am leaning towards the specific field of construction management. Lastly on the introduction of who I am, I was born on the best holiday of the year, April Fools Day.

I decided to attend The Ohio State University because of all the resources and opportunities that it has to offer. I hope that I will be able to take full advantage of these resources to promote my learning and success. Two specific areas that interest me that I look to pursue in at OSU are programming and construction management. Construction management is something that ties in well with my major of Civil Engineering. Programming doesn’t really connect to my major but is something that I have always wanted to learn. I believe that I can use these skills to be successful in the future and help promote prosperity within our country. As well as this, I also want to use these skills to give back to those in need. I would love the chance to join project teams under Civil Engineering to help those in need within our country and in third world countries.
