Global Course in Major

Class Description

For my global course, I chose to take a class that would allow me to learn more about other cultures, especially those in which I may find myself interacting with in the future. The class I chose was, HCS 3380: Latino Workforce in Land Based Industries. In this class we have a series of modules where we learn about different aspects of Latino culture, including history, family, traditions, work culture, ethics, and other topics that all revolve around the culture of the Latino people.

Class Reflection

I have truly learned a lot about our Latino neighbors from taking this course. Growing up, I would often help my Great Aunt at her vegetable stand by picking produce and then helping to arrange it in boxes to sell. She also employed many migrant workers from Mexico to help pick produce in the mornings before they would head off to nearby fruit and vegetable operations in Celeryville, OH. I didn’t know much about Latino culture, or their mannerisms, at the time but this class sure helped to clear up some questions that I had growing up. Moreover, I have found that I can better understand the diversity behind different groups of people, as well as understanding how our hometowns and home regions can affect us as people. This class helped me to see beyond the people whom I have already met within my time at Ohio State and within the agricultural industry.
