Columbus To-Do List #2

In the second Columbus To-Do list, Andrew, Kevin, and I decided to walk a mile north up the Olentangy Trail on November 27, 2018 as a stress reliever. We walked under a bridge and just talked about life and the upcoming finals that we all have to face. The thing I liked about this experience was I got to get out of campus, converse and exercise with two of my great friends, and also the scenery. Though it was frosty, windy, and snowy, everything was pretty, and seeing the river flowing faster than ever was such a sight to witness. If there is anything I would do differently about this experience, I would like to go further north up the trail, and hopefully south as well! I would recommend this to a friend who would like to see the Olentangy river, wants to get exercise, or just wants to get out and enjoy what nature has to offer.

Artifact #2

My personal computer is another object of significance that explains who I am as a person. This is because my father was the first person to introduce me to electronics such as Game Boys, the SEGA Dreamcast, and others, but the one that got me the most interested was having a laptop. From this, I started having a hobby of playing video games, creating new things using notepad and having a game (and even watching Star Wars in ASCII) using command prompt. Because of my father’s influence of technology on me at such an early age, I was able to create my own desktop personal computer that I have come to know and love. Using it everyday reminds me of what first got me into using technology and how I will forever have a deep tie to computers.

Columbus To-Do List #1

For my first group Columbus To-Do List, most of my group decided to go to Kafe Kerouac, just a bit to the left on North High Street, October 28, 2018. The experience was quite unique, as we spent about thirty minutes walking past and to it, which was fun! It included getting a Dr. Seuss (hazelnut, peanut butter, and another flavored syrup tasting coffee) and a rice krispie treat, that was not too sweet at all. I very much enjoyed the coffee and treat, but also like the jazzy and relaxed vibes that the cafe was giving out, alongside with the comic books, board games, and novels that were put on display around the barista, windows, and tables. If there was anything I learned from this experience, I would probably change the communication of the group, as not everyone was present, and I would totally recommend this activity to a friend that would consider going to The Ohio State University, as one can explore a popular and busy place of Ohio!

Artifacts

The artifact that I chose to represent me as a person is my Benge 62B/LTD trumpet that I bought in the middle of my freshman year in high school. I would say my trumpet represents me as a person because playing the trumpet or in general, being in band was one of my favorite and most important extracurricular, as it shaped the person who I am today (leader-like, outgoing, persistent, etc.) and has taught me so many things.Because of my trumpet, I have reached heights I would have never thought to reach, such as playing for The Ohio State University’s Athletic Band, becoming a drum major (position in a marching band where you conduct the whole entirety of them), and learning various instruments along the way (mellophone, French horn, flugelhorn, etc.). There are many connections I can make with this artifact, such as music connecting cultures to people, how there is no limit to what we can do and create (no matter how one puts it, there will always be new music emerging), and how music can assist in creating better moods and projects. One concept that I have learned in Athletic Band is that no matter where you are and what you are doing, you must always push yourself to do better than what is asked for. This concept stuck to me because you will never know how much one person is dedicating to a certain topic or idea, so it is always good to cover for them if they cannot provide.

About Me

Hi! My name is Cyril A. Peña. I was born in Baguio, Philippines, on April 4, 2000, and I moved to a little town called Deer Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am the youngest child out of two brothers, Ralph and Xavier, but still older than my Great Pyrenees, Paxton and Princess. My hobbies and interests include playing video games, listening to a lot of music because it is something I am very passionate about, creating music and taking photographs. My dream job is to become a neurologist, doing clinical research to explore and travel the world, and hopefully help those in need who do not have access to current technologies that developed countries have. I enjoy a lot of things, such as watching videos, playing trumpet or conducting a band, but out of all those things, I thoroughly adore hearing new music. Marching band is an extracurricular that is significant to me as I grew up in a band family that dedicated themselves to helping everyone better themselves, meaning I grew up with a second family that I could go to whenever I wanted to. Major influences on are jazz artists, such as Louie Armstrong and Frank Sinatra, and those who influenced my academic interests are my high school band directors, Mr. Suddendorf and Mr. Vetter, and of course, family. I belong to the Filipino community and the Ohio State University as I am living amongst them, and I am passionate about standing out of the crowd. I can contribute to the community by helping others in need, spreading knowledge about my community, and much more. My biggest accomplishment I have done is being accepted and going to The Ohio State University, where I plan to do all of my studies in neuroscience and foster the spirit of academia.

My strengths:

  1. Connectedness – I connect to this strength because I can help my friends connect to each other when it seems like there is a falling off, so I try to keep links alive.
  2. Restorative – I connect to this strength because if there is a predicament between friends, I will always try my best to fix the relationship between them.
  3. Developer – I connect to this strength because if I realize that there is a skill that I want or a talent I want to gain, then I will be at it for the longest amount of time.
  4. Input – I connect to this strength because it strengthens my ambitions to learn more about the world and the things I find interesting. This continues my quest of being good at trivia.
  5. Empathy – I connect to this strength because I can help understand and alleviate pain one faces if they are hurt from something. This helps them feel better about their situation most of the time.
