Concept Screening and Scoring

Concept screening

A concept screening of each team member’s design is created with key product features that are identified as the most promising for the efficiency of the AEV.  Features such as material and aerodynamics were chosen because the AEV should run quickly By reducing the weight of the material and the amount of air resistance against the AEV it increases the speed at which it travels.  Safety is a priority because the AEV is carrying traveling passengers. Aestheticism and theme are incorporated because from the perspective of a passenger, boarding a vehicle that looks advanced and modern will keep it looking new instead of run down and old-fashioned.

Concept Scoring

A concept scoring with previously selected criteria is created to evaluate the weight distribution in the importance of criteria.  Along with the weight distribution is ranking each team member’s design to determine, on a scale of 0-5 (5 being the best), where the criteria being evaluated falls under.  Lastly, the calculation of the weighted score is done by dividing the ranking for the criteria by five. The total score is then used to determine overall ranking of each member’s design.  From there the team decides which design is the best and would be replicated to create the most efficient AEV.

The pros of the designs compared to the reference AEV are that each team member’s design is safer, more aerodynamic, has more material, and is more aesthetically pleasing than the reference AEV.  The cons of the designs would be the use of more material adds more weight to the AEV, slowing the vehicle down instead of increasing its acceleration rate, as well as throwing the AEV off balance when it travels along the path because of unevenly distributed weight.  Based off the concept scoring the team has decided to move forward with group member Elizabeth’s and Norman’s designs considering that the designs received the highest rankings. The designs use the right amount of material, are safe, display tremendous aerodynamics, aestheticism, and have a great theme.  Moving forward with these designs will help guide the team in constructing the current AEV, applying any necessary changes in the future; as well as learn how to create better designs for future design projects.
