Paul Ueda, a Ph.D. Candidate at The Ohio State University.

Paul is currently a doctoral candidate within the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at The Ohio State University. He works under the supervision of Marjorie K.M. Chan studying topics related to Chinese linguistics. Currently, Paul’s research focuses on the sociolinguistics of orthography, examining how orthography intersects with social and political identity in the case of Taigi (Southern Min). Apart from orthography, Paul also has an interest in language standardization, tone-melody correspondence, minority language participation and equality, as well as the gendered performance of Taigi.

Apart from his scholarly work in Chinese linguistics and Mandarin language instruction, Paul also works as a Graduate Research Associate in the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (ODEIJ) within the College of Arts and Sciences here at OSU. In this position, Paul works with the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Dr. Korie Little Edwards in support of the various initiatives within the college.
