My favorite project that I have participated so for in my freshman year at Ohio State was the first service project called Community Commitment. During this project I was able to get to know some of my classmates in ACES and also get to know the surrounding community of Ohio State’s campus. I was assigned to a non-profit that focused on helping the elderly in the Columbus area. My group and I were taken to an elderly women’s home and we helped her by cleaning up her yard. I was able to bond with my roommate, Morgan, and other classmates in ACES while weeding for someone who needed our help. It was really rewarding when the owner of the house came out and saw all the work that we did. She was really grateful for the help and was really sweet! I also was taken to a community garden. I really enjoyed seeing new opportunities of where I can volunteer in the future to benefit the communities surrounding Ohio State!

G.O.A.L.S.
One future activity that I hope to participate in at Ohio State is studying abroad. I have always been passionate about studying different cultures. I think it would be really interesting to learn about education in different countries. The movie that I did my ACES pillars film project on, Girl Rising, focused on the importance of girls in education around the world. I think that it would be rewarding if I was able to help girls in get the education they need. I also think that studying abroad would help me develop a better global perspective. Since I am from Cleveland, OH and I am going to school in Columbus, OH, I have a small range of what I have actually seen in the world. I think that studying abroad would really help me develop my global perspective and make it possible for me to learn in further detail about girls in education around the world.

G.O.A.L.S.
One planned/ future activity that I fits into the Honors&Scholars G.O.A.L.S. is my commitment to the student organization CHAARG. I bought my membership to CHAARG recently so I will be a new member next semester! I am really passionate about physical activity and being healthy in the mind and in the body. CHAARG aims to empower college age women to live healthy lives. Because I am really passionate about exercise I have some really good ideas for the organization. I am really looking forward to being apart of the club, but I think it would be perfect for me to run for the executive board. I have been looking for a place on campus where I can be a leader. I want to be able to develop more leadership skills that I can use not only here at Ohio State, but also in the future as a teacher or coach. I have some really good ideas about eating healthy, sleeping well, and exercising that I think would be really beneficial to talk about in CHAARG. I know that I may have to wait until my sophmore year to run for a leadership position, but it is one of my future goals!

Artifact: ACES Pillars Film Project

Description: The ACES Pillars Film Project is a group project that we did on a movie that displayed the ACES Pillars which are positive social change, advocacy, community, and service. My group watched the movie Girl Rising. This movie followed 9 different girls as they overcame adversity to get education in various countries.
Reflection: The ACES Pillars Film Project was a really great way to truly understand the ACES pillars. I also think that the movie was really important to me because reinforced why I wanted to join ACES in the first place. I became really emotional when watching this movie I learned that many young girls face struggles around the world with education, child marriage, sexual assault, and many other things. For my next steps, I want to be able to help girls get the education that they need. As someone who plans to be a teacher, this movie made me more aware of the possible struggles that students can face. While these may be different in countries like Haiti, Cambodia, Peru, and India than United States, I still should be making sure that all of my students are getting the education that they need and the care they need at home.
About Me
Hi! My name is Katherine Patty (but I mostly go by Katie)! I am a freshman at Ohio State and I have had a really fun first semester! I am planning on majoring in Math Education. I also recently added a minor called Technology and Youth. My goal for coming to college is to get my teaching license and hopefully become a middle school or high school math teacher! I am also interested in teaching about computers or technology, so after graduation I might get my computer/ technology endorsement. I am from Mentor near Cleveland, OH. I love Lake Erie and the outdoors. At my time at Ohio State I have gotten involved in ACES, Studio Dance, and I signed up for CHAARG! I also am excited for sorority recruitment at the start of next year. One thing that makes me unique is my family. My family is a really big part of my life, and I am so glad to be so close with my mom, sister, and dad. I also have a really cute dog name Roxy.
