About Me

Hello! My name is Mahalakshmi (Maha) Pattabiraman and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I am a sophomore in Chemical Engineering, and I am pursuing the Global Option in Engineering. I enjoy playing tennis with friends, and volunteering around campus. I have also volunteered in high school in places like Baptist Hospital and Home of the Innocents.

Year in Review

Now that freshman year is over, I realize how much I have grown as a person and as a student. As a scholar, I learned the value of time management between juggling a heavy courseload along with extracurricular activities that interest. I’ve along learned that sometimes things do not go the way that you want them to and that’s ok! You have to bounce back and focus on the next assignment, exam, or event because you can’t change something that’s already happened. As a leader, I’ve worked towards becoming the co-president of a club that really intrigues me because of the combination of technology and science and I’m excited to see the progress and lessons that I will learn in the upcoming year. In general, some of the lessons I’ve learnt are that adversities should not hinder my progress and time management is an essential skill that will be very useful in the future. I plan to grow as a scholar by pursuing a Chemical Engineering degree.

  • Global Awareness:

To me, global awareness means recognizing and appreciating the variety of cultures and diversity that exist in our world today. I plan to grow my global awareness by pursing the Global Option in Engineering and completing humanitarian engineering trips.

  • Original Inquiry:

Original Inquiry means understanding my coursework to the point where I am able to draw comparisons to other relevant material that is being covered in my other classes. An example of this would be joining Dr. Palmer’s lab in Chemical Engineering. In the lab, I can see the many relationships between what I am currently learning in class and the tests that are conducted in the lab.

  • Academic Enrichment:

I plan on working towards Academic Enrichment by taking more advanced courses to obtain my degree in Chemical Engineering with the Global Option in Engineering. I chose this major because I wanted to challenge myself to better understand how to combine technology in the healthcare field. I chose to the Global Option in Engineering because I wanted to expand my knowledge and become a more global citizen.

  • Leadership Development:

Leadership Development means taking on roles and responsibilities that will help me develop into a leader who is able to make decisions and lead a group. Currently, I am co-president of Neurotech and I plan on becoming a chair in Ohio State’s Society of Women Engineers Chapter to grow and develop my leadership ability.

  • Service Engagement:

Through the Health Science Scholars community, I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering with a variety of organization located in Columbus. Most of the organizations that I volunteered for (ex: Garden of Hope and COSI) offered me an insight into the multitude of ways to benefit the community. These opportunities allowed me to see the direct impact that volunteering in the community has on others, and these has led me to want to volunteer at the James Cancer Center during the upcoming academic year.
