Psych 1100H: Introduction to Psychology (Honors Section)
How can we be happier? How can we improve our study skills? Are men and women fundamentally different? This course tries to answer these questions and many others, providing a comprehensive overview of the scientific study of thought and behavior. It explores topics such as perception, learning, memory, decision-making, positive psychology, implicit bias, development, and many others.
Psych 2462: Psychology of Creativity
To be human, is to be creative. This class celebrates human ingenuity of all types. In learning about what brain science has taught us about the human creative process, we will learn how we can improve our own creative thinking abilities. Students in this class each semester investigate creativity in the Marion community. Click here to see what they’ve learned!
Psych 3313: Memory & Cognition
Cognitive psychology, the scientific study of the mind, is one of the most exciting and all encompassing areas of psychology. Given that the mind lies behind all of our thoughts, desires, dreams, judgments, emotions and resultant behaviors, having an understanding of the mind will help us to gain a much better understanding of ourselves and those around us. In fact, by the end of this course you’ll no doubt be surprised just how important human cognition is in nearly everything you do!
Psych 3371: Language & Mind
This course will introduce you to the science of language and its position within the human mind. Except in case of severe brain damage, speaking a language is something that seems both effortless and intuitive for all adults. Similarly, any child can learn to speak any human language if the child is exposed to that language from an early age, with almost no direct teaching. And yet, a close look at any human language shows that it is an extremely sophisticated system. This suggests that there is something special about the human mind that makes it able to learn and use language.
Honors students may take this with an honors embedded component.
Psych 3513: Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience
Cognitive psychologists have been exploring the human mind through behavioral studies for over fifty years. In parallel, neuroscientists have built-up our understanding of the human brain. Cognitive Neuroscience lies at the intersection of these fields, asking some of the toughest but
most fascinating questions in science: How are memories stored in the brain? Is our brain pre-prepared to learn language? How does the average human brain outperform many face recognition algorithms?
Psych 4454.S: Language Development
Have you ever wondered how children learn language seemingly so effortlessly? In this class, we’ll consider the major theories and milestones of language development. In addition to theoretical knowledge, students will have the opportunity to apply that knowledge to efforts being made to improve the literacy rates in Marion County. Students in this course will read to preschoolers at the Marion Public Library and reflect on their language skills. In addition, students will develop a research-based video for Let’s Read 20. Students will gain practical knowledge of using research to address a community need.
Honors students may take this with an honors embedded component.
