Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Global Awareness:

Honors students should strive to make some sort of impact not only domestically or in their personal lives, but also beyond their own borders. Students that come to The Ohio State University tend to come from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. A student should have many different perspectives and experiences upon which to make educated decisions which range from minuscule to colossal magnitude. As the world becomes more interconnected through technology, humanity must strive to keep up. I plan on using my education at OSU to study abroad and perhaps do internships abroad to gain a wider perspective compared to within Campus walls. In addition, Campus itself offers many religious and cultural organizations to gain an even wider array of knowledge. Thanks to the honors program’s various opportunities, I hope to become a wiser member of society with a more global outlook.

Original Inquiry:

Ohio State offers many opportunities to participate in large scale research in a plethora of fields. It also is never too early to participate in research no matter what role that entails. Speaking to my computer science professor I now have many choices in how I want to participate in research. I hope to spend my summer participating in research to further my understanding of the possible chances the university has to offer. An internship provides the opportunity to gain hands on work experience that you just can’t get in the classroom. First time job seekers and career changers aren’t usually desirable candidates, but companies are willing to train them as interns and give them the experience they would need to get a job. Internships also give networking opportunities to students willing to work and perhaps let you know if your major is something you will be happy with for a large portion of your working career.

Academic Enrichment:

The Academic Plan is invaluable in allowing students to plan a decent amount of classes so one has a mindset of how they would like to spend their undergraduate portion of their collegiate career. The Academic Plan is one step before the Honors Contract, which is the most important document to any honors student in the university. My course selection has allowed for me to highly anticipate my upper level Computer Science classes. Although I have never taking any programming classes prior to entering the University, it is the first class I have taken in a long time that I felt so passionate about. Even though the work has a heavy difficulty curve my fascination with this world makes the long and difficult project a fun and worthwhile experience. I had a passion for economics in high school, which allowed the selection of my econ minor. Hopefully, these two fields can have a good synergistic relationship and allow me to have a well rounded education.

Leadership Development:

Leadership is an important asset to students who wish to be involved inside and outside the classroom. There a many ways one can cultivate their leadership and teamwork competencies. A strong leader is one whose management skills become second nature. Leaders must oversee operational tasks, make budgets, prioritize workloads, build consensus and perform other executive duties as necessary. Practicing these skills in college can teach you how to use your personal talents for the overall advantage of your group. Another helpful way to balance many obligations to meet while maintaining a full course load and attending to other personal responsibilities. It will take some creative problem-solving to get everything done and keep life in balance. Leadership experiences allow you to hone multitasking abilities that future job and life responsibilities demand. I hope to have some experience working on campus by this upcoming semester.

Service Engagement:

It is basic human necessity to extend a helpful hand to those who need it. Our educational experiences in conjunction with the other goals can allow us to serve society and the world. Service is an excellent way to once again broaden my perspective and create a more developed educational foundation. Understanding community needs helps foster empathy and self-efficacy. It also helps in leadership positions, so you know how to properly assist and lead your task force to success in the workplace. It also is a way to relieve stress and feel a sense of accomplishment and appreciate the things you do have in life if you are in a emotion slump. The whole experience of working for the good of someone else is cathartic and is one of my fondest memories of my years of schooling prior to University.
