Year in Review
[ “Year in Review” is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student. You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year. G.O.A.L.S.
Global awareness helps everyone to understand each other better and gain an appreciation of every individuals differences. I believe the best way to achieve a better understanding of different people is to expose yourself to many individuals from different cultures and with different beliefs. My plan is to take advantage of volunteer around the world to gain an understanding of people and cultures around the world while helping them in medical clinics to receive treatment that they may not have access to. Volunteer around the world isn’t the easiest way to gain global awareness; the easiest way is to get around to meeting the diverse community of Ohio State University. Participating in activities that go on every week and talking to as many people as possible.
Original inquiry is the idea of learning through research and new developments. On campus there are many different research opportunities as Ohio State is a research university. I plan to contact my science professors, specifically neuroscience and psychology professors, to see if they can recommend me to any research that is going on in those fields. Research such as behavioral studies where I can learn more about the behavior of people and link that with what I’ve learned in my classes.
Academic enrichment is the pursuit of academic rigor through course work. My future plans are to apply for medical school where competition is high. The important part is that I learn as much as I can during the four years of undergraduate school to prepare me for the difficulties in medical school. I plan to take various sciences to prepare for medical school. My major of neuroscience and minor of psychology are topics that I am interested in as I want to be a psychiatrist. I plan to take many psychology courses to learn more about behavioral, emotional, and mental disorders and how they affect people. This will help me to prepare for my pursued career and get my mind thinking about everything that I will need to know later in medical school.
Leadership development is how we prove that we are able to take lead and be responsible for more than just ourselves. There are many opportunities for leadership in the classroom, clubs, the community, residence halls, etc. With these opportunities I plan on finding a way to spread the idea that mental disorders are more common than people think. I want to try and get rid of the negative stigmas attached to mental disorders and help people get help they may need. I want to lead people to help with this movement starting with people who have like minded views.
Service engagement is the action of helping in the community. Like I said previously, I really want to push for idea of spreading awareness of mental disorders and helping people get access to help they need. There are clinics that people set up for areas where people don’t have access to the resources that others have. I want to volunteer in those clinics in the area, but also around the world in volunteer around the world.

About Me
I am Shaan Patel, an honors student at Ohio State University. I am majoring in neuroscience with a psychology minor and I am pursuing medical school with the hope to become a psychiatrist. I would describe myself as diligent and caring as I enjoy helping people in areas where there is disparity in education and mental health education. This is the reason why I am pursuing a career related to mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. I hope to spread awareness of mental disorders and get rid of negative stigmas related to mental health.
