Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Global Awareness:

One of the most memorable achievements I have accomplished was participating in a Buckiserv trip for Juvenile Justice. We went into the juvenile detention center to teach and hopefully inspire kids to not let their time in the detention center dictate their future.   Through the duration of this trip, I was exposed to a whole new perspective on life. I have never met so many kids who continue to smile and have a positive outlook even though their circumstances are bleak. I learned a lot about loyalty and dedication. The part that impacted me the most was being told how much it meant to them that we came and asked about their aspirations and cared about them.

The whole experience made me realize that everyone has the potential to achieve great things. People can change their lives, but it often requires support and care from others. I can apply this lesson I learned to the rest of my life as well as career because everyone deserves to feel cared for. In the medical field, it is very important to recognize that hardships people face and treat every patient like they were a family member. I was also able to recognize that I am lucky enough to be surrounded by people who always want to see me succeed. It really shifted my mindset and taught me to be more thankful for what I have. I now have a greater sense of compassion and care for others.

original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: I involved with an organization on campus called Universal Health Aid; Columbus. This organization is an innovative and progressive organization dedicated to improving universal health through preventive medicine, health education, and leadership development. I was the Chief of Membership Engagement and Professional Development. This role taught me about collaboration as well as the delegation of tasks. I was responsible for organizing activities for the members to get to know one another.

Service Engagement: Service is very important to me. Throughout my two years at Ohio State, I have become involved in many service projects. I currently work with Columbus Refugee and Immigration Services through a program called Community Connectors. In this program, I mentor a young girl who is a refugee from North Africa. I serve as her role model and help her adjust to her new life. I have learned a lot about patience and compassion from this experience. I also volunteer with Wexner Medical Center.

About Me

Hello my name is Meera Patel. I am from Palatine, a northwest suburb of Chicago. I am currently majoring in neuroscience and on the premed track. I hope to become a doctor one day, but I am not sure about exactly what I want to be. In high school I was involved in many clubs. Student Council was a huge part of my high school career and I really enjoyed planning school dances and service projects. I used to play tennis too. I like going to music concerts with my friends. I am excited to see all the adventures and learning opportunities The Ohio State has to offer. Go bucks!
