Year in Review
Sophomore Year In Review
As my second year of undergraduate comes to a close, it is an excellent time to reflect on my experiences through the first half of my undergraduate career by examining the steps I have taken towards achieving each of the five G.O.A.L.S. of the Honors Program.
Global Awareness
Global Awareness as always been important to me as I believe diversity to be a key source in inventiveness. As such, I have enjoyed learning about Hispanic culture from the Spanish courses I have taken so far, and I look forward to continuing to learning about such rich cultures in future courses I plan on taking such as Greek civilization.
Original Inquiry
Original Inquiry is something I enjoy but have not experienced to a large degree yet. In the future I hope to remedy this by taking upper level course work and hopefully as a research lab assistant on campus next year which will allow me to better understand the research process.
Academic Enrichment
Academic Enrichment has always been important to me, which is the reason I am on the rigorous path to graduating with honors with the hopes that the challenging coursework will better prepare me for the difficulties that lie ahead of me in medical school and medical practice. I chose neuroscience as a major as I believe the curriculum to be both interesting and beneficial in my future goals. The GE courses that I have selected reflect the topics I have an interest in but do not directly relate to my future goals; yet nevertheless, contribute to broadening my academic experience.
Leadership Development
Developing leadership has meant to me to not only guide someone towards their goal but teach them the skills necessary to continue on their path on their own as well. The past year I have been involved in helping to coach high school and middle school swim teams which has due to the small size of the teams have given me an opportunity to practice working with someone one-on-one to best find what works for them. This directly relates to my career path of wanting to be a physician as a physician must work with patients individually to find what treatment would best suit that person.
Service Engagement
Service has been an aspect of my life since high school that has enabled me to better empathize with others. During the past two years, I have volunteered at Southern Ohio Medical Center in a variety of positions and plan to continue serving at this hospital in the future.
G.O.A.L.S.
My G.O.A.L.S.
Global Awareness: I plan on increasing my awareness by learning about other cultures and people with different background through coursework along with interaction through programs that involve contact with various groups of people including different students and patients. I also hope to be able to spread global awareness to others through student organizations to discuss with people issues concerning the high levels of discrimination within the U.S.A based upon people’s beliefs, race, and social background.
Original Inquiry: I plan on taking part in research experiences within the neuroscience field with the intent of expanding our knowledge concerning common issues such as stress and how they effect underlying neural mechanisms along with potential interventions.
Academic Enrichment: My coursework during undergraduate will consist of several honors course along with a few 4000 level courses to help me gain a better understanding of the sciences along with the humanities which serve to enhance my ability to think about scientific inquires. Additionally, I plan to augment my major curriculum for neuroscience with several additional psychology courses to help connect the bridge between neuroscience and clincal applications.
Leadership Development: Throughout my time at Ohio State University, I hope to be able to take on leadership roles where I may assist others in there academic lives as well as in planning out their future goals and the necessary steps to reach those goals.
Service Engagement: I plan on continuing my service to the community through volunteer work at local hospitals in Columbus such as the Riverside Methodist Hospital and from my hometown such as Southern Ohio Medical Center along with hopefully being able to serve as a future mentor for my future underclassmen at Ohio State University.

About Me
My name is Jiten Patel, and I am a honors student at Ohio State University. Currently, I am pursuing my ambitions in studying neuroscience as my undergraduate major with intentions of continuing my education in medical school. I have a passion for and at dedicated to helping and teaching other people.
My passion for wanting to teach others stems most meaningfully from my experience as an assistant swim coach and as a swim team captain. During this time, I enjoyed being able to help other swimmers improve during every point of training and then to see their improvement appear in competition felt rewarding to both the swimmer and me. The experience gave me the desire to assist others in reaching their potential and help them persevere through the struggles along the way.
The combination of my interest in medical science and wanting to see others improve led me to pursing a career as a physician. The occupation of a physician would allow me to assist people when they are facing some of their most pressing problems while practicing medicine’s intricate combination of physical, biological, and social sciences which greatly appeals to me in order to help provide the best care to patients.
