Artifact #2

This picture was taken on Friday, November 3 in Hitchcock Hall at the Cultural Show hosted by the Indian American Association (IAA). Each year IAA holds a cultural show where each class is asked to put together about a 3 minute dance to perform for the audience. Accompanying these dances are acts performed by fellow students, showcasing their diverse talents through singing, dancing, and even stand-up comedy. As  one of the Freshman Representatives for IAA this year it was my responsibility to put together the dance for the Freshman class. At the end of the show the audience votes on their favorite act for the night and a winner is chosen. For the last 3 years the current senior class has been the returning victors of the show and everyone was expecting them to go home that night with their 4th and final win, thus disregarding the freshman as suitable competitors. Little did they know that the freshman had come prepared and ended up winning that night breaking the senior’s streak of 3 years of victory. This picture of the freshman class was taken on stage right after the winners were announced. This experience showed me that it does not matter if others think whether you are eligible/worthy or not, if you believe in yourself and put in the hard work and dedication, victory is always possible. It also showed me the importance of time management and the importance of compromise by adjusting practice schedules according to everyone’s availability.

Artifact #1

This picture was taken on Wednesday, September 20th right outside of my dorm room. I was coming home from a Big Sib/Lil Sib event that was hosted by IAA at OSU and I was frantically rushing home to get ready for the gym where my friends already were waiting for me. I had misplaced my phone in my room and I could not locate where I put it, thus adding onto my already antsy nerves. All of a sudden, there was a knock on my door and I frustratedly jolted the door open to find a friend accompanied by about six other people. They started cheering and clapping congratulating me on being chosen to be a  new body member for BuckeyeThon. The acceptance/rejection email were supposed to go out that night, but they also chose to personally come to each new member’s door step and congratulate them. To capture the moment we decided to take a picture with my congratulatory letter. I chose to make this my artifact because to me this is a very proud moment where I prove to myself that I have grown and that I am capable of accomplishing things if I really strive for them. The interview process, along with the application process, really tested me to think outside of the box and to teach myself to believe in myself. The interview itself was very intimidating, by being interviewed by 5 others in an official board room with questions that forced me to think on the spot effectively and efficiently. I remember walking out of the room super hot and nervous, thinking to myself that I just blew my chance of being a part of an organization that I planned to be a part of since high school. The self doubt was eating away at me the whole week, constantly influencing my mood when the topic came up. When I was warmly congratulated and welcomed into the BuckeyeThon family that night, I was overjoyed and a sense of self-pride and more importantly a sense of self-trust started to develop in me. Coming to college I constantly have been doubting myself. Telling myself that this is a big school with many people and there will always be someone better and someone smarter to fill the role, but moving forward this will no longer be the focal point in my head, but instead I will learn to believe in myself and my capabilities.

About Me

Sakhi Patel is a first year undergraduate student at The Ohio State University. She is majoring in Environmental Public Health and is on the pre-med track. In the future, Sakhi aspires to take a role in the medical field by becoming a practicing physician. Her interests currently cultivate in Cardiology and Neonatal Medicine, but she is still very open to many other fields of medicine. Sakhi has great passion for public health, community service, education for underprivileged children, and medicine. Sakhi is from Westerville, Ohio and she attended Westerville Central High School. During her high school years, Sakhi’s passions heavily influenced her to become involved in student government, a variety of service organizations, vegetarian club, National Honor Society, and varsity tennis. She became Key Club president, the largest high school student run service organization, her sophomore year and held office up until her senior year. Also, Sakhi used her passions to organize service trips to India in order to personally help educate underprivileged children and provide lacking basic health care with her family. When not in class, she enjoys expressing herself through painting and drawing. Sakhi is also a huge movie fanatic and will always be found at a local theater watching all the new releases or re-watching classic old time films.
