Layering Space

Description:

In this assignment, I was asked to construct a composition using paper layering techniques to emphasize and exaggerate a sense of depth and space. The concepts I explored extended from techniques from the Autumn term (perspective, layering, scale, and other principles), adding an encompassing narrative. I was asked to create a composition in black, white, and greyscale cardstock that visually illustrates the space.

Project Statement:

I wanted to convey what deep space means to me personally. I wanted to showcase the sense of deep space through the narrative and not necessarily through the layers of composition. I wanted to show how over time my mental health changed, and through greyscale and silhouettes, I conveyed how I was happier as a child and mental health started breaking as I grew up into an adult.

Reflection:

This outcome is something I wanted to create, but in terms of class grades and requirements, I think I could have done better. I could have played more with creating a sense of deep space through more layers and detailed etchings and cuttings. I am glad that I was able to present my narrative very clearly and show what deep space means to me personally.
