Layering Space – Process

                      Layering Space

Design Foundations 2130

Description:

In this assignment we were asked to construct a composition using paper layering techniques to emphasize and exaggerate a sense of depth and space. The concepts we explored were to extend from techniques explored Autumn term (perspective, layering, scale and other principles), adding an encompassing narrative.
We created a composition in black, white, grey scale cardstock that visually
illustrates the space, using a minimum of 5 flat layers of paper to explore the principle of scale to convey foreground, middle-ground, and background.

Research:

  • Started with the concept statement
  • Researched some pictures from realistic pictures on the internet and cited them

Concept Statement Rough Draft-

My number one concern for this assignment is to create a design in certain way to make the image look deep not just to me but also for the audience. So changing curves and lines inside my chosen design is the challenging part, especially using the pen tool on illustrator. Using . So, for my final project I would like to start off by selecting a color scheme with grey card stock and layer them within a chosen color theme. Then I would decide on what design I want on which card stock and decide their arrangement on the paper individually to bring out the intended look. Depth for me is something dark, something that goes deep inside. The thought of depth scares me but there are things that represents depth and are beautiful visually. I want to show something beautiful visually but make it seem deep and scary by applying depth and color scheme to it. For example, a rainbow. Using scale and sizing my design individually on each cardstock, is what I am going to use to create depth with the color to create scene. I want to connect the design together in certain way that even if one part is missing, it still shows the depth and the message.

EXERCISE:

  • For the exercise in this assignment, we were asked to create a puzzle piece, designing it by including one of our initials and create something within the letter using shapes and fonts.
  • I had quiet a few iterations in this journey, and also knew exactly what I could’ve done better in terms of designing.
  • I started exploring abstractions that can fit the letter “H” as it’s my first name’s initial.
  • Later because I found it challenging to work with that letter, I decided to work with my last name’s initial, which is “P”.
  • But somewhere in this project, I wanted to include my whole name showing something that is personal or is connected to me.
  • So using the letter “P” I decided to portray an image of raining from inside the umbrella, because I enjoy getting wet in rain and watching it too. But the main reason of adding rain to the concept is because my first name “helly” means heavy rain in my mother tongue Gujarati.
  • The pictures can best describe the iterations and struggles I went through of this journey of exercise.

CONSTRUCTION:

  • I started to think about this project with a thought of what deep space meant to me. Deep space for me is something dark and scary. So I wanted to create something that is deep and is figured out by the darkness.
  • I then started thinking of abstractions and topic that I can use to create such sense of space.
  • My original thought was to create something related to Earth’s core and give it an abstract shape of mountains. Leading it to deep caves and a figure drowning.
  • But then I didn’t see that coming along and decided to use mental health or emotions to show deep thoughts in terms of space.
  • So, I started creating a composition using shapes to show my theme. I started by using the heart shape, then it derived from that to a realistic heart figure.
  • I then started building my design off of the narrative I had in mind and created a rough draft.
  • I later decided to show it as my personal story, so I used my own portrait and converted it to a silhouette for my final composition.

FINAL:

  • There is a deep meaning behind this whole composition.
  • The girl silhouette on the top is me as an adult. It has messy hair and tear drops showing how mentally broken I am. The dark color and crumple on the paper shows how scary it is for me to live as an adult.
  • The melting heart composition in the second layer shows my mental health from high school and how I wasn’t completely broken and still had joy left in my heart.
  • The solid heard in light grey shows my heart from middle school, when I was exploring the world and when everything didn’t feel like a burden. Those were some of the best days of my life.
  • The final figure of a little girl shows the time when I was very young and had nothing to worry about. My life and heart were so pure and filled with love to share. And the white color used to portray that is the symbol of peace.
