2D to 3D Translation – Process

   Exercise 1 – Creating a perfect cube.

– The cube on the left was the cube that I constructed for the first time. I struggled with gluing pieces together because my tabs were really small. So, for the next attempt I made sure that the tabs are bigger for it to be easy to stick and created the version on the right. Then in class we made the digital version of what it looks like from different perspectives.

Exercise 2 – 2D to 3D transformation of the letter “F”

– The next exercise we did was to create a three dimensional letter “F”. I started by measuring and drawing the template from digital to on paper. The picture in top left is how my template turned out. I then cut and built the template into a 3D form. I had hard times folding and sticking the tabs in this particular project but the directions said it doesn’t have to be perfect, so I managed to do my best and built the forms that are shown in the photos above. I then drew digital version of each side (to show different perspective).

Constructing a shape from Assignment 2 in a 3D form:

– On a piece of card-stock paper, I drew a part of the design from Assignment 2 (Point, Line, Plane) and added tabs and shapes to create a 3D form of it. The picture on the left shows my 2D drawing on the paper and the picture in right shows how it looked once constructed in 3D.

                       Assignment Iterations

– The photos above are the iterations from the process of deciding my final design for the project. In order to create my potential form from previous assignment. I cut and taped shapes together to create three different ideas for my final form. Pictures above shows the attempts that I made to figure out different designs that I can use for my final project. After making so many different designs, I chose to make one using the design from the pink stock paper but changing the sides into triangles and top into something that would make the plane view look the same. And by taking ideas from each iteration, I managed to create my final design. These photos also consist process of the next part where I was supposed to choose one option and create a form. I chose option 3: Comparison and created my final design inspired by the second last photo (Three pyramids).

                                Final Construction Iterations

– In order to create my final design, I started with drawing the template on the left. But once I started constructing it into a 3D form, I realized that it is very hard to stick my form together because of the sizes of tabs attached. My project ended up breaking because the tabs were too small and it was too delicate to handle. So, I decided to re-do the template and add thicker tabs so that it is easier for me to stick the project together.

– The second last picture shows how I constructed my option 3 (comparison) design. I taped shapes together to create something different and unfolded them in a certain way, so that I can use the design for the template.

– The very last picture shows how my final project broke while it was getting constructed and so I had to re-do it with some mathematical fixes and deciding different dimensions as well as placement of tabs.

                                               Final Design

– These are the pictures of my final outcome. Since the primary shape, I decided to work with was very unique, I found it difficult to work with when it came to construction and building with unique ideas. Since there were three triangles, I could not think of many options that I can use to create this project. My primary thought after looking at the triangles was to create something similar to pyramid and because I had three of them, I ended up creating three pyramid looking shape. Also the construction process felt pretty hard because my project was pretty small in size and I couldn’t make it bigger because I did not have enough space of Bristol.

                                          Option 3 – Comparison

– This is the final outcome for the option 3 (Comparison). Again since my design had very minimal space to put tabs in, it was hard for me to stick this project together. I also felt that construction was harder because of its smaller scale.
