Competing in the event for a second time, I was able to once again walk away with an appreciation for the role of the sales profession, a comprehension of the sales process in a business to business setting, and, most importantly, the ability to verbally perform in a competitive environment.

This year while maintaining a logical, process-oriented approach along with a positive attitude, I earned a spot as a Top 10 finalist out of the 80 registered participants.

Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome of the competition. I plan to take the lessons I have learned along with me as I begin my professional journey after graduation in May 2017.

International Affairs Scholars Program Education Abroad- Reflecting Back on Mexico

Uxmal

An international experience symbolizes an opportunity to see, to taste, and most importantly to live in a world previously unknown to oneself. From May 8th to May 28th, in hopes of engrossing my senses during an exploration of a foreign lifestyle, I travelled with approximately twenty additional Ohio State student’s on the International Affairs Scholars Program’s May Study Abroad to Mexico’s historical Yucatan peninsula. I had the opportunity to experience a cultural experience like no other. I initially set out in hopes of seeing an ancient civilization’s ruins, tasting famous indigenous dishes, and experiencing the culture of the Yucatecan populace. In reality, I was able to achieve all of my hopes for my education abroad trip and more. Continuously studying and immersing myself in a culture that was not my own, this particular education abroad experience was even more of an enlightening opportunity than I expected. With my academic peers by my side, I was able to observe the striking similarities, differences, and interconnections you have encountered between the Yucatan peninsula and the United States of America. Additionally, I was able to personally develop an ability to function effectively within the region despite some obstacles. In the end, on the International Affairs Scholars Program’s May Study Abroad to Mexico’s historical Yucatan peninsula enriched my academic and personal experience as a student of the Ohio State University. Reflecting back upon my education abroad trip, I do not believe I would have been able to fulfill my academic and personal goals without this experience. Thus, I am forever thankful to the host institution, coordinators, and the Ohio State University for this opportunity.

Overall, my education abroad experience to Mexico has enriched my academic and personal perspective on life. Before leaving for the trip, I made the decision to graduate next year with the Class of 2017, a year early. This study abroad program has afforded me the opportunity to supplement my domestic business curriculum with an actual international perspective on the Mexican economy. I was able to make observations regarding the tourism, retail, oil, and transportation industries in the Yucatan peninsula. With a first-hand account of the facets of the Mexican economy, I believe my business degree has more of an international perspective that I could not put a price tag on. From a personal perspective, I believe this experience has allowed me to grow as a global citizen through cultural comprehension. This trip has motivated me to continue to strive to understand how other cultures function financially and culturally in hopes of developing lasting relations with other global citizens. I really enjoyed the opportunity to bond with twenty motivated, culturally diverse students that were also striving to be global citizens. We bonded by getting to know the culture of the Yucatan peninsula. Additionally, in my personal time, I was able to develop personal relationships with my host family, students at the university, and people I met at a salsa dancing class. I hope to continue these relationships to practice my comprehension of the Spanish language and culture and to further develop as a global citizen. Reflecting back, I have loved my education abroad experience in the Yucatan peninsula. I have truly had the opportunity to to see, to taste, and most importantly to live in a world previously unknown to oneself.

The International Affairs Scholars Education Abroad to Toronto was an excellent chance to connect my International Affairs Scholars program curriculum to an international experience. I had the ability to practice cultural literacy and global awareness through the study of Canadian international affairs and economics. During the international experience, I also had the opportunity to encourage global citizenry to first year members of the program through the promotion of cultural comprehension.

In the future, I plan to continue to my education abroad experiences and my responsible global citizenry efforts.

International Affairs Scholars Program Education Abroad- Mexico Pre-Departure

During the month of May 2016, I will be travelling to the Yucatan peninsula with the Honors & Scholars Program to study and explore the culturally rich region of Mexico. Together, we will research tourism’s main role in Mexico’s socio-economic development, the historical implications of globalization, environmental preservation, and cultural diversity.

The International Affair’s Scholars Program sponsored trip to the Yucatan Peninsula region of Mexico will not only contribute to my Scholar’s program’s curriculum, but my personal educational curriculum and interests in the region. Even though the classroom portion of the program is offered through Universidad Marista de Merida, this trip is offered through the Office of International Affairs as a university-sponsored study abroad program. As a group, we will not be confined to a class room at the Universidad Marista de Merida, but we will be exploring the entire peninsula. The education abroad offers the unique opportunity to visit each of the three states of the Yucatan region of Mexico, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. In each state, we will be observing the different cultural, economic, and social practices of the native populace while attempting to understand the historical impact of globalization on the Mexican society. In the state of Campeche, we will be visiting historic haciendas of the henequen civilization of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and analyzing the lasting economic and social implications the institution had on the region. Within the state of Quintana Roo, as a class, we will be analyzing the adventure/eco tourism industry in major cities such as, Cancun and Cozumel, as well as the cultural tourism industry at the sites of Mayan ruins. In the base state of the Yucatan, we will be staying with our host families and studying at our host institution in Merida. My trip is an extensive one country trip to Mexico where I would not only explore, three states, but over fifteen cities throughout the region.

In the Yucatan, I plan to utilize by knowledge that I have gained from my business curriculum to research and analyze tourism and the main role it plays in issues of socio-economic development of the region. Additionally, I hope to take what I have learned in the classrooms of my Latino Studies and History curriculum and employ it during the interdisciplinary program in the Yucatan to examine the preservation of the indigenous culture and historical sites throughout the region.
