G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

To become more globally aware and experience other cultures, I aspire to study abroad at least once during my time here at Ohio State. I took four years of Spanish in high school and thoroughly enjoyed the lessons where we got to learn about Spanish holidays, traditions, and customs. I intend to continue taking Spanish courses in college and would love to visit a Spanish-speaking country to be immersed in their language and culture. Visiting somewhere in Spain or South America would allow me to see first hand some of the things I have studied in high school. I would also like to take more courses about Spanish culture here at Ohio State.

Original Inquiry:

I am fascinated with the idea of research and discovering new things! In high school I enjoyed taking medical-based courses where we were able to perform experiments, such as an ELISA test to determine how a case of meningitis spread through a college campus. This was very enjoyable for me and I loved being able to come up with theories and solve problems. I aspire to do something similar in a lab in college, that has to do with the spread of infection/disease and hypothesizing ways to stop the spread of them.

Academic Enrichment:

I am currently majoring in neuroscience and on the Pre-Med track, which will help me prepare to achieve my goal of attending medical school and becoming a pediatric neurologist. I know that in order to do this, I will need to take all the pre-requsisite courses to be admitted into medical school, which may be very challenging, but helpful in the long run. I know I will need to be committed to academic excellence if I want to build my resume for medical school, so I will ensure I am challenging myself to do the best I can in every course.

Leadership Development:

I recently became involved with an organization on campus called “Bucks for TOPS” that partners with the TOPS program in the Ohio State Nisonger center which focuses on providing a modified college education for those with intellectual disabilities. We have  fun events planned to interact with the TOPS students and give them the socialization aspect of college they might not receive. Also, we are planning a fundraiser in the spring to raise money for scholarships for TOPS students. I hope to become very involved in this organization and eventually be part of the leadership team of the organization.

Service Engagement:

In high school, I was quite involved in my community and loved serving others. I volunteered in the nursery at my church, collected food for the local food pantry, and worked concession stands for school athletic events. I plan on continuing to be involved with the community at Ohio State and have an impact on the city of Columbus. I have signed up to participate in Buckeyethon, a 24-hour dance marathon that raises money for Nationwide Children’s Hospital! I also want to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house, where I have prepared a meal for families staying there while their child is in the hospital.

About Me

Hello! I’m Makayla Parsons, a freshmen at The Ohio State University. I am from Canal Winchester, Ohio, a small city about 25 minutes southeast of Columbus. In high school I enjoyed volunteering in the nursery at my church, being part of the National Honor Society, playing on my school’s softball team, and working with students who have learning disabilities. I am majoring in Neuroscience, in the honors program, and on the Pre-Med track. My passion for Neuroscience and medicine stem from my older sister, who has a severe neurological disorder that causes her to have seizures everyday. I have seen how the condition has impacted her my whole life and I want to do anything I can to help those like my sister who suffer from similar issues. My goal is to attend medical school after I graduate and become a Pediatric Neurologist (because I also love working with kids!) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.
