G.O.A.L.S
Global Awareness:
At the conclusion of my sophomore year at Ohio State, I participated in Global May: Madrid, Spain. It was the most enriching experience of my life thus far, because I was truly emerged into a society that is extremely different than my own. I got the opportunity to speak the language, and even live with a Spanish host-family. This helped to broaden my perspective about the world lingustically, culturally, and politically. In the future, I hope to do this again, and I was honestly so inspired by the trip that I would even love to work in a Spanish speaking country during my career as a teacher.
Original Inquiry:
In the second semester of my sophomore year, I took FEEP. FEEP is a program for future teachers where you are emerged in a high-school classroom of a school in the area, and you must “figure out” how it works. At the conclusion of the semester, I did a research project surrounding high-schoolers and the ACT, which taught me a lot.
Academic Enrichment:
In the future, I hope and pray that I become a high-school English teacher. Additionally, I would love to teach English in a Spanish speaking country. At OSU, my major is English with a concentration in Literature: Pre-Education, and my minor is Spanish. I feel that these paths of study have already taught me a great deal. My FEEP class last semester as well as my study abroad in May truly solidified my desires in terms of my future career. The honors GE courses that I have taken, for example Honors British Literature Medieval-1800s, helped me a great deal. I am not very good at analyzing “ancient” texts, but my professor, Leslie Lockett, truly opened my eyes to the beauty of this topic, and I am forever grateful to her for that.
Leadership Development:
At Ohio State, I am a member of College Mentors for Kids, and I serve as the Human Resources Director for my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. Being in these leadership roles is not easy by any means, but I think it is absolutely necessary for me to be involved in things outside of academia in order to be a successful student. Life is about balance! These positions have taught me time-management, accountability, and responsibility that will last me far beyond my years at this university.
Service Engagement:
My favorite thing to talk about when I talk about OSU is College Mentors for Kids. It is a program that I got involved with the beginning of my sophomore year, and I am absolutely in love with it. College Mentors for Kids is a nationwide program that pairs university students with under-privileged kids 1st-5th grade, we meet once a week for two hours at the Union or elsewhere around campus/their schools, and we mentor and spend time with them. My “little buddy,” Olivia, is incredible. We had a rough start to our relationship, as we did not always see eye to eye, but seeing that little girl smile not only makes my Thursday every week, but that smile makes college worth it for me. Getting involved in this program is about more than just the service hours I receive because of it; furthermore, this program is about enriching the lives of children who need a steady guide in their life and in turn, allowing that little buddy enrich my life as well.
