Peer Mentoring: Resources & Scheduling (Weeks 7 & 8)
I’m feeling the class’ energy decrease a little as we hit the halfway point in the semester, but the new university resources assignment seems like it will lift them up a little: They get to walk around campus and find new resources. It teaches them about a resource on campus and lets them practice searching for Ohio State’s plethora of resources on Google. This assignment synthesized my peer mentor and RA trainings as well: I got to explain the difference between Younkin Career Services and Career Counseling and Support Services.
The most wonderful time of the semester is also coming up: scheduling for next semester. I don’t know why I get so excited for scheduling, but recommending classes to take is one of my favorite things to do as a peer mentor. Since I’m working with humanities students this year, it makes me more useful to the class. While I loved working with math, physics, and pre-med students, I couldn’t give them scheduling recommendations. All the humanities classes I enjoyed involved too much reading and writing, and the science classes I took were BA-approved only. This year is so different: Students dislike science as much as I do, and I recommended the one Honors French class at Ohio State multiple times. It’s also very relatable to watch students write and rewrite their schedules on scratch paper. Honestly, I thought I was the only one who did that.
With scheduling on its way, we’re officially halfway through the semester. I’m sure the freshmen are ready for it to be done, but it’s going a little too fast for my taste. As much as I love university resources and scheduling, I feel like we just did the icebreaker during Week 1 last week.
