Year 2 G.O.A.L.S.
Global Awareness
To develop my Global Awareness, I have lived on an international floor, participated in extracurriculars where I met students from all over the world, I studied abroad and am currently planning to study abroad next spring. My freshman year I lived in the International House Learning Community in Morrison Tower, where most of my floor-mates were from outside the United States. Through this experience, I learned about several countries whose cultures were unknown to me, like China and Japan. I learned that while students from these nations are reserved at first, they become close friends after a few awkward dinners together. I enhanced this experience by participating in activities such as the English Conversation Program and Morrill Global Buddies, which allowed me to interact more with international students. Off campus, I have studied in Quebec City, Canada, a French-speaking city. I lived here for six weeks while taking French language and literature courses from the Universite Laval. I am currently planning on studying abroad for a semester in Dijon, France. Through these experiences, I’ve learned outsider perspectives on the United States as well as how one’s culture and language influences how they view the world.
Original Inquiry
I have experienced the research process in and out of the classroom to help me understand the research process. I have worked as research assistant on a French language acquisition study for the past two years, learning lab procedures and how to share a lab space with other studies from my professors and fellow research assistants. In-class projects include research papers from a variety of courses like History and Art History. I have researched topics such as women in 1950s Korean film and the wife’s role in the Arnolfini Marriage Portrait (1392). Thanks to these projects, I’ve not only strengthened my research skills but also inquired about topics outside of my major. To continue to improve these skills, I am considering doing an undergraduate thesis under the supervision of a professor from the Department of French and Italian or Linguistics.
Academic Enrichment
My Honors Contract has higher level courses from several departments outside of my majors, Linguistics and French, demonstrating a commitment to academic enrichment. To satisfy GE requirements, I have taken courses offered by the Departments such as Statistics, Earth Sciences, and Anthropology. In my majors, I am currently taking higher-level courses, and last semester I took a French literature course with graduate students. I chose to study Linguistics and French because I enjoy learning about language and culture. Studying Linguistics allows me a study a wide variety of languages and how they interact with culture, while my French major allows me to study one language and culture in-depth.
Leadership Development
Through my experiences as a Cultural Ambassador for Resident Enrichment (CARE), CARE Coordinator, ASC Honors Peer Mentor, and Resident Advisor, I have developed my leadership skills. As a CARE Ambassador, I worked with other Ambassadors as well as RAs to reach out to international students and put on events to get them more involved on campus. As a CARE Coordinator, I supervised a group of four CARE Ambassadors and mentored them in doing the work I did as a CARE Ambassador. These experiences led to my receiving a mid-year position as a Resident Advisor. As an RA, I supervise a floor of more than 60 residents, serving as a resource to them in academics, wellness, community-building, and campus life. My residents this semester are mostly freshmen, and I have been able to learn about their experiences, offer advice, and refer them to various on-campus resources like tutoring services, Career Services, and the Wellness Center.
Service Engagement
While at Ohio State, I have participated in projects such as the Humanities Scholars’ Treat the Hungry project and Pay-It-Forward’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Treat the Hungry was an evening where a group of about 20 students dressed up and trick-or-treated, asking for non-perishable foods instead of candy. During the MLK Jr. Day of Service, I participated in organizing a nursing home’s warehouse. To continue to engage with the community, I plan to participate in other days of service on and off campus.
