Hats for Homeless

Description
I set out earlier this semester to learn to knit hats and scarves. I did this as part of a group, including Kami, Owen, and Meredith. The intent was for this project to both teach ourselves something and provide a community service. We shall complete this latter objective by donating our creations to a local homeless shelter.
Process
Knitting was a skill that I have wanted to learn for a while, so when Kami suggested it, I was enthusiastic. We proposed this idea right before winter break, so our first step was to somewhat master the art while we were away from school. Then, once we were back, that would be prime knitting time.
Results
It turns out that I do not like knitting. I learned the basics, thanks to Kami and my youngest sister, but I found it tedious. Therefore instead, my boyfriend taught me to crochet. Though less traditional than knitting, crocheting is much easier and therefore I was able to pick it up more quickly. The four hats that I made all were crocheted. After watching me, my mother has asked that I teach her to crochet. I shall do my best, but she is left handed and a teacher (teachers make the worst students!). I have yet to donate the hats; I have decided that I want to continue creating them over the summer and then give them away when it starts to get colder outside.
Reflection
I am quite thankful that this project really motivated me to learn something that was on my ‘to do’ list for so long. In addition to just a fun hobby, I have found that crocheting is incredibly relaxing and helps me take my mind off of things. I also feel more productive when I am watching TV while crocheting, compared to just watching TV.
Pictures
As I stated, I made four hats. The first two are made of the simple single stitch, but with the latter two I incorporated a double stitch for that interesting ridged texture (as seen in the close up).
