Week 15 Tying it all together

I have learned that students retain and hear 50% of what they see and 80% of what they see, hear and interact with. This is why so many of my students consider themselves hands on learners. I believe that is why many of them come to Career Tech. They feel comfortable with that kind of learning, which is different from traditional classroom learning.

I now know the CBT and WBT refer to online training. Computer based training and Web based training.

I learned that MPEG is Moving Picture Experts Group.

I have learned about new and different technology for delivery of information to students.

The flipped classroom.

How to insert hyperlinks and video into power points.

How to use Prezi

How to do a web quest

Found many social networks that I did not know about.

Discovered that too many people  blog about food and don’t know what they are talking about.

I have already used many of these in my classroom. The prezi I made for class will be used in conjuction with my recruiting of future students.

I plan to get my new iPad set up to access students in a more timely manner, and bring some additional demos into the class.

Week 13 Evaluating Educational Technology

Evaluating technology involves knowledge and nurturing teaching skills that can be applied to the classroom. As a fairly new teacher, I have discovered that I am working to bring more technology into my classroom. While taking classes on education  I realize that the opportunities for what I can do with my materials is overwhelming when deciding how I will deliver this information to my students.

One of the concepts that really interested me, and seemed like something I could incorporate into my teaching is to have flipped classrooms

There are many times that I have the students learn materials before coming to class and then have them teach the rest of the class the material that they were responsible for learning prior to class. I know this is not exactly how the flipped classroom works, but I seemed like could be heading in that direction.

Week 11 Technology, digital media

Technology does make it easier to assess student work. You are able to load rubrics and grade sheets in the computer or on an I pad and see instant scores for a specific project or lab. The difficulty comes when you must take the human part of that participation into account. If you have a range of points per section, you are making a human assessment and observation. That assessment includes moving through the classroom and listening to each student and making note of how well each student participates.   The technology is a great tool especially if a project is done as a web quest or an assignment online. You have the ability to see how each person is contributing. If the work is all being done on the computer, then access to online windows or activities will enhance your grading ability.

Week 14 Security Issues, Ethics,

The ethical issues of digital citizenship are one of the most urgent problems. Unethical and inappropriate behavior creates a digital reputation that may not be who you are, but how you are seen in the online community. You are shaping your digital reputation and being responsible when you are participating in online communities, social networks, gaming social website. Employability skills that are taught in the classroom may not be helpful if the digital citizen has established a questionable reputation in the digital community . Potential employers now use social media to help with employment screening and determine if the person on the internet would be a safe, reliable and trustworthy employee for their company.

Week 10 Issues in Education

The issues that impact me integrating technology into the classroom, is that many of my students do not have internet access at home.

The second issue is that I have only three computers in my classroom.  I have to schedule time in the computer lab or the ERC for online sessions. Unfortunately, the testing done though out the school takes president over my class time.

I realize that some students need to make other arrangements to do online assignments, and I hear  I don’t have transportation to the library, or I don’t  have study hall during the day, some of my students don’t even have a lunch period.

Week 9 Digital Media

The advances of technology in the digital age have touched every area of society, from interpersonal communication to the way information is disseminated. Today’s children are able to manipulate sophisticated software, search the Internet, play games, and download information without being aware of the cognitive process involved. They are exposed to so much more than I was as a student.

I currently like the fact that I can use digital media in my classroom, and bring many things to the students other than me standing and talking all day.

Week 8 Hardware for educators

I think that hardware for educators for me was a very hard discussion and lesson,

I saw too much and we went over it so quickly. I recognized many things but I must say I cant really cant see how this will apply to me at this time. I am not involved in any purchase or equipment for my class room, and I still is not something that I can wrap my head around.

Week 7 Effecitive uses of Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel gives businesses the tools they need to make the most of their data. They can make the most of their resources, and maximizing return on investment, this is becoming increasingly important.

Excel spreadsheets are commonly used across business to display financial information and other data relevant to the running of the business.

Excel can be used to bring information from various files and documents together, so that it exists in a single location. As well as raw data and information from other spreadsheets, it is possible to import text and images. Other objects can be added using the Insert tab, or additional spreadsheets can be added to the file.

I have used excel for inventory, tracking expenses, and also when I am working on grades for students.

Week 5 Communication

Communication in the classroom, whether it is digital or verbal or video, etc, will depend on the access the students have. I think are communication today has exploded beyond anything I would have imagined as a child.  Everything is so instant, we live knowing what is going on in the world in a matter of seconds.

Unfortunately this can be a huge issue when information is reported erroneously. Everyone is too quick to get it first and get it fast.

My students will text each other is the same class. They communicate even when they are sitting next to each other.  I think the technology has done a lot for us, but then again, the art of conversation, and writing to communicate is much different.

Week 4 Presentation Software

One of the things that I would like to try is to SKYPE with other culinary students that my students might not have the opportunity to meet. Maybe in another country, or even across the US. I think it would be interesting to hear how they would contrast and compare their culinary experiences.

Although I cannot utilize it in my class, I can see the value in being able to communicate so easily and rapidly. I viewed our discussion last night as part of the downside of easy communication, if we were raising hands and answering questions in class it would have been less chaotic. But, that is not to say that those types of interactions do not have their place, being able to “attend” class from anywhere is a fantastic benefit for students like myself that commute to school.

If we are using presentation software in the classroom it is important that it enhances the lesson and doesn’t overpower the lesson.
