Year in Review

During my time at Ohio State, I have done many things to develop my global awareness. I started to get involved in an organization called Emerging Leadership Initiative, which helped me develop the habit of staying informed about news around the world. I also went to several OUAB events that related to global issues, including one presented by Diane Guerrero, a daughter of immigrant families. I will continue developing my global awareness by taking more classes including ones in my Spanish minor and international studies classes.

In classes like Organic chemistry and Biology, I have begun learning about the different methods and the process of doing research. These classes have required lab reports and in Biology I had to do a controlled experiment and eventually a paper discussing the effects of endophytes on their hosts, plants. In the future, I would like to do research with faculty here or back in Cincinnati, especially research related to medicine.

I am planning on majoring in Neuroscience, which is a tough major with many applied science courses in it. I decided to major in this rigorous major because the study of the brain is a relatively new field that has lots of room for research. I also enjoy studying and understanding just how powerful our brain is. During my later undergraduate years, I plan on taking courses that have to do with history, some cultural Spanish courses, upper level neuroscience courses, physics, and biochemistry. These will help me learn more about the field of science and help me with my goal of attending medical school.

Right now I am involved in several leadership activities. Back in Cincinnati, I am a supervisor for Soak City, located in Kings Island. I am also involved in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT for short) as a counselor, where I help teach young boys and girls how to become leaders in their communities and troops. At Ohio State, I am currently involved in the Ohio Union Activities Board, which helps plan exciting and enriching events for the student body. Finally I started to get involved in Emerging Leaders Initiative, a group that also trains people like me how to leave a legacy at Ohio State and beyond. All of these groups have allowed me to learn more about myself, including my strengths, weaknesses, my passions, and also what my purpose in life is. These valuable skills and experiences will me become a better doctor, father, and person in the future. Learning never ends though.

Like I previously mentioned, my leadership camp is a short-term commitment of service. In the future I plan on volunteering for Mt. Caramel, a hospital near campus, so that I can learn more about the medical field. I also would like to find new activities that are about conservation efforts both at Columbus and around the country (or even the world!).
