Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: At Ohio State, there are numerous international students from many backgrounds. Several are now close friends, ad we discuss the differences of our cultures to learn more about those cultures and countries. Beginning next semester, I plan to take a course covering multiple religions, as many cultures are largely affected by the spirituality that they express. Additionally, living in the dorms brings many diverse people together, and arguments often arise that different opinions can be extrapolated from.

Original Inquiry: I have gained an understanding of the research process by participating in several experiments as a subject through my Intro Psychology course. Later, I will endeavor to join a faculty member’s team to understand the other side of research, particularly in the field of neuroscience or music.

Academic Enrichment: Academically, I plan to take multiple honors courses to gain a more in depth understanding of course material. Particularly being a pre-med student, I will take many upper level science courses to challenge myself and broaden my thinking skills. I also plan to engage with my professors to learn as much as I can from them, as they are experts in their respective fields.

Leadership Development: I participate, and plan to continue participating, in athletic band where the success of the ensemble depends on the commitment of its individual members. This forces us to work together and help strengthen not only our own weaknesses, but the weakness of those around us. As I become an upperclassman in the organization, I want to become a section leader so I can help guide the younger members.

Service Engagement: Beginning this summer, I plan to volunteer at a regional hospital to better understand what parts of medicine appeal to me. Once I return to Ohio State in the fall, I would like to continue volunteering or intern at a hospital or other similar healthcare facility. That experience would not only allow me to help those in need, but to also learn what areas of medicine appeal to me.

Career

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

Alex Oyler I am a first year student at The Ohio State University from Leo, Indiana. I am a neuroscience major, a musician and a lover of books. I graduated from Leo High School 4th in my class of 236. In high school, I enjoyed anatomy and biomedical courses. While I am unsure of my final career, I believe that obtaining  a medical degree and working for an institution like the VA would be very rewarding.
